Hello all, new to the forum, not new to scooters or engineering/design and custom fabrication...
So for years I've been riding vintage vespas, and after a few mods and general maintenace I'm ready for something more challenging and creative.
Long story short here's what I'm thinking unless you talk me out it...
1. A completely custom, mostly aluminum sheet metal chassis made in the styling of vintage vespas. 2. 150cc gy6 engine 3. NCY ruckus front end kit (shocks, disk brake, axle, wheel, hardware) 4. Probably a vintage vespa style fuel tank 5. I'll do most of the electrical and lighting on my own
Generally, speaking are there better components to design around than the gy6 and ruckus style front ends?
Any thoughts are welcome, including those that simply want to say I'm "bat sh!t crazy".

Ambitious project. The 150cc GY6 has a lot of potential and a lot of parts availability. Can be turned into up to a 232cc stroker with a lot of work. Runs pretty well in stock form too... 50-55MPH cruiser in most cases. Another scooter engine that's got a large aftermarket is the Minarelli/Jog style two-stroke. Stock 35-40MPH cruiser as a 49cc. If you get a 90cc version (short cases available in youth-ATVs) ~50MPH cruiser stock. The high end 70cc or 85-95cc kits for them will outrun most GY6 builds, but they aren't really for everyday use. If it's going to be tagged as a motorcycle, it may be easier to go with the GY6. If you want to pass for a 49cc, the Minarelli can be 110cc and still look like a stock 49cc on the outside.

I'll look into the Minarelli, thanks!
Do you or anyone else know what it takes to get something custom like this registered?

It will depend on your state/local procedures and what you intend to register it as. In MD I have been told you have to set up an appointment with a State Police inspector at the MVA's main office.

Thanks GT, I'll need to do some research on what the inspector will be looking for.
So I've noticed there are a lot of companies selling GY6 engines, and the prices seem to be all over the place. Do any of you have recommendations of where to buy from and why? I realize there are a lot of different suppliers of the GY6 since it is a somewhat generic design, are there suppliers to avoid?

I would probably just pick up a GY6 on eBay or Amazon for about $300 shipped. You can get them from places like PFS or MonsterGY6 for closer to $500 shipped. I know PFS gives good customer service, but is it worth $200 in this case? I guess it depends if you're unlucky and get a bad seller and a damaged engine or something like that. I assume most engines will be about the same. I'm sure some are better than others for quality, but which is which I do not know.

Why the ruckus front end? Ok so what do you mean by "chassis"?? Are talking about the frame or the skins?

Why the ruckus front end? Ok so what do you mean by "chassis"?? Are talking about the frame or the skins? Clank, do you have other front end recommendations that are readily available? I'm attempting to select parts to design around that can be ordered, received, and installed without buying old scoots and reusing as much as possible. Who knows, maybe I'll build a few of them. As for the chassis question, the answer to your question is "yes". The skins are the frame, the frame is the skins. If you're familar with the vintage vespa style of frame/chassis, this is what I'm doing. A vintage vespa frame has no tubular steel, etc., only formed and welded sheet metal. In my case I'll be using aluminum.
