This is my first post and I figured I'd post my progress of a scooter I bought.
Last year for my wife's birthday, I bought her a Yamaha Vino 50cc 4 cylinder. She's wanted one since she use to have a scooter when she was a teenager and she absolutely loves this one. I ended up getting the bug also after I rode around on her's a couple of times over the past few months.
A scooter showed up on Craigslist and the guy wanted $300 for it. It had a few issues. Primarily he could not get the scooter to start by the normal methods so he did a bit of a hot-wire setup on the starter relay. The throttle cable was broke. He also could not get the lights or horn to work. I started talking to him about it and went down to check it out. He started it up and it sounded really good. I was a bit surprised at how well it sounded, but I told him that If I couldn't take it for a test ride, the most I'd give him was $100.
Well he agreed and now I have a GY6 139qmb 50cc chinese scooter for $100. It's exactly like the Tao Tao VIP Future Champion but it says 'Velocity' on the sides. It has a few scuffs here and there, and the seat has a small hole in it, but it's the perfect base to make a good scooter. Even came with a 2 month old battery!
The first thing I had to do was to figure out why it wouldn't start normally with the key and controls. That was actually easy. Apparently this scooter came with an alarm system so I did some research and found out how to remove it and jumper the connector. That's done and now it starts up normally and I've removed his infamous hot-wire setup.
The Auto-Enricher is hosed so I decided to go ahead and buy a new carb. I figured I'd have to clean it anyways and buy a new auto-enricher, so with a new carb setup, I'd have it easier on me. It actually runs okay now, but seems a little rich.
The lights was amazingly easy to fix. At first I thought that it was a stator issue, but all it ended up being was the stator connector was not connected properly. Stator puts out good voltage from 12vac up.
I've also got a few other parts on order.. New ignition wire and coil (jacket was cracked), throttle cable (original was broken), turn signal housing (internals of one of the bulb connectors was bad), kickstart lever (was missing), Turn signal relay flasher (not working), New mirrors (the ones that came with the scoot don't even match and look gaudy), new headlights (originals were blown), and a new belt cover (original was cracked).
Since I've got all the panels off the scooter I figured I'd make it my own by changing the color scheme. I'm eventually going to probably do a BBK and some other mods, but for now, I'm trying to get this scooter road worthy so my wife and I can go on some scooter dates..
I decided to go with Yellow and Black. I've always liked those 2 colors together, and after seeing a picture online of this same body type scooter in that color, I'm hooked. Since I'm doing yellow and black, I talked to one of my co-workers who has a vinyl cutting machine and had him make me some transformers decals. He made me some in yellow and black and they turned out awesome!
Here's the vinyl decals he made. they are inside the transfer paper so they don't look too good. He did the name "transformers" in the original design, and the newer movies design. All in both black and yellow!
Here's some pics of the scooter that the original owner sent me. Needs some work, but that's what I was looking for!
Here's kinda what I'll be going for as far as color and looks, of course minus any stickers or decals shown..
I'll post some new pics this weekend as I get a few more things done!
