I'm thinking that maybe a light scrub just dissolves the topmost, yellowed layer of plastic. Pretty, pretty clever.

lol ok. I'm willing to give anything a shot at this point! I just used meguires plastic polish for atv plastics on one of my flips and it worked well. Have you ever tried wet sanding with 1500 or 2000 grit paper??

Have you ever tried wet sanding with 1500 or 2000 grit paper?? Yes, I also use plastic polish on all my flips! Wet sanding with up to 2000 grit on lots- results shown in many of the flip threads... I've tried the whole gambut of sanding yellowed chinese plastic and never had any success. I have a headlight restoration kit that goes from something like 500 grit to 800 grit to a strange leather like pad that I assume is similar to 1500 or 2000 and finish off polishing to clear with the compound. I've even gotten angry before and sanded and sanded (wet) one spot like crazy with the 500 and never got through the yellow. It seems that these plastics just get yellowed pretty much all the way through. I actually have the lense here that I've been sanding on- prolly my 8th attempt at the yellow plastics- and it's still yellow batting a thousand.

It seems that these plastics just get yellowed pretty much all the way through. Got me thinking...why does it yellow? How deep does the yellowing go? Found on The Straight Dope: "Transparent plastic (especially polycarbonate ... tends to yellow because the UV wavelength breaks the long chain molecules into smaller segments. These products are generally non transparent, and over time tend to accumulate and discolour the plastic.
Reconditioning is possible, but generally not worth the time/effort/cost. The discolouration tends to occur in the first few micrometers (1000ths of a millimeter) of the surface. It involves sanding off and repolishing of the surface." Huh - how long's it take to polish through - by hand - 4-8 1000s/mm? Does the broken chain/yellowing go deeper on Chinese plastic because the protective coating is not as good as that, say, applied to auto headlight covers?

Build is coming along good! A little slow but good. Haha. I'm onto cosmetics now and have been taking pics along the way. I basically didn't work on it at all over the weekend. Spent practically the whole weekend doing yardwork! Just last night I re-mounted the engine and hooked it all back up. I sucked on the vac line to the petcock to save some cranking on the battery (to fill the carb bowl) and then I spent a lot of time cranking and cranking and cranking it over. I pulled the plug and it wasn't even wet. Hmmm. I then choked the airbox by holding my hand over it and finally got the scoot to start at about half throttle. It wouldn't idle at all unless I held it at half throttle. I thought in my head "It's almost as if it's not receiving any fuel at all through the idle jet" I opened the carb up and cleaned the idle jet and she starts instantly at the touch of the button now and purrs like a kitten! Build update and pics to come soon!

Updates!! hEY aLL! I actually finished up this scoot 2 days ago and put it on Craigslist already but I've been slacking on the build thread updates doh! tampa.craigslist.org/psc/mcy/5073919946.htmlHonestly though, I have the whole front end of this scooter torn apart right now for a silly reason and it's sitting next to me while I take a little "computer break" phew. I really do try to live by the words of the late great Napoleon Hill and always try to "go the extra mile" but, um well sometimes- I think I take it too far lol. See that silly little diamond thing on the front of the scooter there? It doesn't really serve a function- it just kinda lights up and looks cool but I have a serious pet peeve when it comes to scooters and that pet peeve is; Yellowed Plastics! I hate yellowed plastics! hehe. Well, I keep looking over at this nice looking R1 scooter and that stupid darned yellowed plastic diamond thingy in the front just keeps taunting me... Yes, I gave in and tore the whole danged front of this scoot apart just to get to that damned diamond! I thought my Roketa Air was hard to get apart. This scooter is built like a danged tank I tell ya! No wonder it's so danged heavy and slow- there's gotta be like 40 lbs. of course threaded screws just in the front of this scooter alone. Holy over-engineered Batman!! Well, one thing leads to another and the another and, well- I made a video for y'all so you can witness my madness muwahahhehehheelollollleehahehee Ok sorry fellas- I've pulled myself together now. I think I'm just crazy tonight because I know I gotta wait another whole danged season for Game of Thrones again.... Winter is coming....

Ok, I've skipped over a lot of details here but I was taking pics along the way! As Paul Harvey would say; Here's "The rest of the story." The side panels were in pretty rough shape. This pic doesn't even really show just how bad the paint was cracked... I originally taped off the top of the panels and sanded and painted, but I wasn't happy with how the finish turned out so I ended up filling the cracks with primer- like I should've the first time- and re-sanded. There's something wrong with this picture- yellowed plastic signal lenses! Grrrr The finish turned out good this time and painted the top of the panels in a flat black and trimmed them out in silver pinstriping. You can see that I also painted the blinker lenses with orange paint from the inside- can't stand yellowed plastic! I handed over my $3 at Walmart and got me some of that there fancy black vinyl and re-dun that there nasty seat. I did some more polishing and overall prettyin up, but I still needed to address the elephant in the room. What in the bleep am I going to do about this yellowed gauge cluster plastic?? I searched and searched and even went to the Chinese scoot manufacturers website and searched some more a replacement lense- or even the whole gauge cluster for that matter- and just could not locate one anywhere. I even reached out to a few GMW (Wolf) dealerships as crazyguy suggested, but no dice. What in the world am I gonna do here boys? Well, desperate times call for desperate measures! I threw that danged yellow lense deep into a landfill and found myself a new piece of plastic! That's right- I manufactured my own! I would've liked it to be a bit thicker than the piece I used, but hey- no more yellow and the rider can see the darned gauges now! I took my soldering iron and welded that puppy in good! I smeared a nice layer of sillycone in there to make her nice and waterproof and called it done! Of course there were a few little odds and ends along the way that popped up- the blinkers wouldn't blink so I stole a relay from the 150cc parts scoot and took care of that. The front nose was crackled and chipped like the side panels were so I gave it a cool two-toned look with more flat black. Of course y'all know I just couldn't stomach that little diamond light thingy in the front and tore the front end back apart just tonight... All in all she turned out to be a real nice scoot and she starts up and purrs like a kitten of course! In the end though, I gotta say that I am more than a little disappointed in one aspect of this scooter- and it's a pretty important aspect if you axe me... THIS DANG SCOOTER IS TOO SLOW!! Yep- a danged turd I tell ya! It really is a nice scoot and I love how it looks- large and in charge like I like 'em with the full sized 150cc size frame and 12" wheels and tires and even looks real nice sitting in the garage next to my Roketa Air scoot which normally makes most of the flip scoots I get look small, but therein the problem lies; This scoot is just too big and heavy for a bone stock 49cc 139qmb engine. There I said it- this 4poke is just way too pokey for me! It runs fine and all, but jeez- it really takes forever for it to get up to speed with my big azz on it- and I even lost about 5 lbs!- I'm at my "summer weight" haha. It ends up doing about 34mph which is about right I guess, but I'm really hoping that whomever takes it for a test ride is a petite human. It feels so slow that I'm actually a bit worried that it might be a turnoff for a prospective buyer. Ehh- hope not. I've done what I can to make it a nice scoot, I'll just have to suggest a BBK for the new owner! There's actually two different prospects that're supposed to show up tomorrow (today actually) so I'll just keep my fingers crossed and report back to how it went. Poor lil' 139qmb- I'm not trying to badmouth ya- really I swear! Just a lot of scoot for you to handle!
