I ask to hold the cash or drivers license when someone test drives my scooter. You never know if they know how to ride or they may not come back.

Unless you have a motorcycle license, most sellers will treat you this way. You could try giving him a deposit to cover any damages in the event you dropped it or crashed it? Look at it from his point of view... he knows nothing about your riding skills and if you were to drop it and damage it you could just say, "sorry" and walk away. Sorry doesn't help him recover the damages.
So no, it's not a red flag. He's protecting himself.

I would feel a bit suspicious, if a clown wanted a joyride i could understand , but if ya got cash & he wont let ya try it at least in a empty lot etc. I would walk away , maybe he knows how to ride it to hide flaws?

I've only sold one 2 wheeler, but I never let anyone ride it for free either. For all I know they could crash it or ride off since some showed up with someone else. I did offer to ride it for people so they could see it run with no intention of hiding anything. I was honest about any issues it had anyway. One guy was hellbent on riding it so I told him if I could hold the cash he could test ride it. Handed me the cash, rode it, bought it.
Same deal with a Mustang I sold. Everyone saw a hopped up Mustang with 2 nitrous tanks and wanted to take it for a test drive. Sometimes people just wanna take advantage of a free experience. Some even admitted they had no interest in buying it.

Usually what i sold on cl. If they were interested they would give thier phone # for me to call , you can weed out alot of clowns that way & can read people telling thier intentions. I wouldn't sell or buy a vehicle if not test drivin. (Unless its a non runner of course) had people asking tons of questions , but 9 out of 10 times if they ride it , they have a smile & cash hand extended. Upon return. , if someone is kinda unsure after that , act like your getting a text or call about item for sale in front of them. That seals da deal! i really hate selling things , kinda awkward.

What a tuff call……… I can see the different sides of this. But from a law enforcement standpoint and as someone who has had to respond to and has taken statements with regards to stolen property (almost always Craigslist deals), there is nothing wrong with getting collateral from the perspective buyer before a test ride/drive (don’t take their car keys…... for various reasons!). Also confirm that they are licensed to operate that particular vehicle in whatever state you’re in. When it comes to vehicles, he or she may not want you to “hold” their licenses while they test drive, all 50 states require the motor vehicle operator to possess a valid operator’s license/permit and have it on their person during operation on a public thoroughfare or roadway. –Just saying……
Also, if you’re truly worried, have them meet you at a fire station or police/sheriff’s office. That tends to scare off the ill doers.

It's not that uncommon. He drove it in front of you. What else do you want?

I agree with everyone here. My coworkers brother had a motorcycle for sale. A guy came by and wanted to test ride it. He let him take it for a spin. He ended up slamming it into a tree bending the front forks and triple tree, hitting the front head breaking the valve cover, severed the cam chain and destroyed the cam, and bending the frame under the tank.. Needless to say, I ended up buying it off of him for next to nothing because of all this and I made a pretty awesome motorcycle out of it... my 1984 Honda V65 Magna! Here's my forum posts about it with pics
