Hello, I have a Yamaha BWs 50 1998.....I am trying to find the actual engine displacement. Some areas are saying it is 49cc others say 50cc, is there an easy way to check without measuring the bore? thanks

Welcome! 49cc is 50cc. They actual displacement is usually like 49. something cc. Usually the laws for an area specify "under 50cc" so thats why many are 49. something people just call them 50cc sometimes, they are the same thing.

Many thanks for the welcome. I am asking this in regards to license etc....in my area I need a license if it is 50cc or more....so if it is 49cc I don't? been trying to find the specs but it is hard due to the many models out there.

Find a 49cc sticker & pop it on the engine. Dmv around my way needed to see something saying less then 55cc to comply to moped status.& yes i did put a little 49cc sticker on flywheel cover & it was ok. Most engines are lower displacement then stated 50cc=49.3or 49.7. 125=123 , or 250= 247 etc. Check for metal id tags on scoot. Sometimes its there with emissions tag.

In stock form it should have a 40mm bore and 39.2mm stroke. displacement cc = (bore radius in mm squared x Pi x stroke in mm x number of cylinders) / 1000 displacement cc = (400 x 3.1416 x 39.2 x 1) / 1000 displacement cc = 49.260288

well many thnaks but it is now a non issue....one my dmv here states that ANY scooter regardless of size requires a motorcycle license two can't get her started...I thought it was the battery...replaced that, changed the plug too......fresh gas and oil. when i try thge kick start it turns a few times then I hear a click and it ceases...wait a few seconds and try again.....I assume the electric start is almost the same engine appears to turn over then I head a click...and nothing......is there a starter on these and is maybe toast??

Welcome to the forum. From my experience as long as the scooters physical size is that of a "50cc" scoot and your not passing cops on the shoulder or being a dumbass, then the police or DMV doesnt really give you a second glance. DMV enters the scoots vin into thier system at redgistration and know if is a 50cc bike or not. Some bikes like the Super 8 offers a 50cc or a 125cc version of the bike. Insurance may ask which you have but there again they should know through the vin. Ive seen guys shoehorn 125s and 150s into 50 frames and even when pulled over and asked, tell the police its a 50cc and cops are like "okay" and drive off. Most police dont even know the restrictions of speeds or engine capacity with regurd to scooters.

Here in FL the 49cc scooters and motorcycles are all given the exact same plates and stickers so there's really no way to distinguish between them while riding anyway. I regularly pass police officers doing 55-60mph (49cc scoots aren't supposed to go over 30mph) and I don't even bother to slow down. For all they know I'm riding a 150cc "motorcycle"...

there actually isn't a law regarding speed limits on 50cc scooters in florida
only one for wearing a helmet going I believe 35mph or under on a 50cc scooter. thats it.

Here in Ontario Canada there is really no distinction between a 50cc and a small displacment motorcycle in the eyes of the Government. The only real law is that a 50cc in not allowed on any road with a speed on it of higher then 70KPH(43MPH) although I doubt whether or not anybody knows or cares.
