I just acquired a Yamaha C3 scooter. At 10,120 miles. This neat little scooter will run for a few minutes and just shut down. Typically, this is a sign telling me it needs a valve adjustment. Great. does anyone have advise in dealing with shim under bucket adjustments? I haven't got started pulling it apart until I get a better idea of whats involved in this operation. Any ideas?

i dont know about yamaha c3 shim and buckets but toyota shim and bucket valves are a pain. furst measure the valve clearance. second, remove the shim and measure its thickness. third, select a shim of the appropriate thickness (ie if your valves are too tight select a thinner shim, too loose select a thicker shim.). install the shim then remeasure the valve clearance. Its a tedious process that involves having a variety of shims available...

Hmm. They had a fuel-pump recall, did they not?

The 2007 model yr actually had a recall on the fuel pump. The adjustment providing you can do basic math, lol, is actually pretty easy. But seeing if you have a tight valve causing said condition is very easy.

I'll be delving into this neat little scooter this weekend. I'll post my findings.

There is a service manual either on here or over at Zuma forums for that c3. Yes they have fuel pump issues but you can get a new aftermarket pump from eBay for about 30. Takes about an hour to change pumps. Sometimes the pump just quits and then you know. Sometimes (like mine) they get week and power falls off slowly and you don't notice. A good running c3 should bury the stock speedo and hit the rev limiter with a 200 lb rider. They limit rpm by retarding the timing and you can hear the exhaust note change when that happens. Oh I've never even checked the valves on mine. Check compression before and after it quits sounds like it could be a fuel pump issue. A low battery (like if you have to kick start it) will do that also

Okay. It's been a while since messing with the C3. I replaced the fuel pump. Now I get lots of fuel. Too much in fact. I bought one off eBay. Looking at what I'm working with, I don't think its the pump. The previous owner mentioned he cleaned the injector; scraping it with a screw driver. He might of damaged the the injector but I don't have a way to test it. When removed, it shoots out two streams in a "V" pattern. I'm reluctant to spring for a new injector but if it's what it takes, then that's what I'll have to do. I had a friend give me his opinion on this and it makes sense. He felt that the replacement pump was putting out too much fuel. The scooter starts up and runs. But, it is flooding out and after a few minutes it quits running. He suggested possibly adding a fuel pressure regulator and start it at a low setting. Has anyone experienced these issues?

If they cleaned the injector with s screwdriver it's probably your problem.

Aren't they supposed to shoot out a fine cone shaped mist?

Fuel pressure needs to be regulated through use of a schrader valve. Its critical for proper operation.

I doubt you have to much pressure. The way they cave man cleaned the injector is probably your entire problem. That's why some people shouldn't be allowed to have tools
