Hi, I purchased a lance charming scooter(my first scooter) last summer for $200.00 the lady said that the carb was gummed up and she was tired of putting money into it. So I got it home and cleaned out the carb and got her fired up. top speed was maybe 25 mph if I was lucky. I thought it was still the carb so I bought the new larger carb and got it in there. Adjusted it and im still getting some pretty poor performance. For some reason after riding it for a while, I lost power, top speed is now 10mph. Im wondering what I should do. I am thinking of getting the bbk. Any help would be appreciated, I am thinking that I may have a bad coil? Should I just order the bbk and a new coil and cdi and call it a day?

:welcome2:
Are there any other symptoms? Sputtering, bogging, does throttle position matter, etc...?

Yea, I would classify it as bogging down when I give it gas which I thought was running too rich so I leaned it out. Still have the same problems.

Incidentally I did the poor mans compression test and it seemed pretty decent. It was blowing my thumb off and I was holding it down pretty hard.

My first suspicion is a clogged main jet. If that's the case, you can usually idle fine and use very very light throttle, but heavy throttle should bog hard or even die. If you take it apart to check the main, might as well clean the whole carb.
Next thought is a CVT problem. Removing the cover and inspecting might not be a bad idea.
When you took the plug out, did you see if it looked fouled or white etc...? If not, have a look at the spark plug.
Look for a cracked intake, vacuum hose, or other intake leaks.
Make sure you are getting sufficient fuel, no clogged lines, filter, etc...

I'm thinking valves.

Thanks for the help guys, did the valves when i got it last year. checked out the belt and it seems within tolerance. theres a chance that the carb could have gotten clogged but it is a new carb so im not sure. I will check for any leakage around the intake area when I get home.
The plug was fouled yesterday when I was troubleshooting a no start problem. turned out that the one of the wires going to the coil had come off. So I had the plug out and it was sooty black, i cleaned it and leaned out the carb and still had the same problems.

A loose coil coulda led to the fouling. Clean up the plug or replace it.
The fact that you were riding and it lost power eliminates any new parts from immunity.
If it's been a year, a valve adjust is a good idea. I forgot I was in the 4T section. lol

I have got my old carb that was cleaned up and should be pretty good. I will slap it on and see if it make any difference.

How many miles are on it?
It has been my experience that a way lean condition caused by a vaccum leak will soot the plug making it look way rich.
If it were me this is what i would do:
Carefully inspect the intake and vac lines. with it idling, spray carb cleaner or starting fluid or flow propane around the intake where it meets the head. check around the vac lines where they attach to whatever (vac fuel petcock/egr valve.) listen for RPM increase. (for propane use a plumbers torch that screws onto a disposable propane bottle, unscrew the end of the torch and slide a long length of vac or fuel hose onto it and let the propane flow around the intake and vac lines. this will make the rpms jump nice so you can pinpoint the leak with no mess. carb cleaner works fine too though.) Wherever you flow the chemical that causes an rpm spike...thats your leak. replace an nessecary.
Clean the entire fuel system. disassemble the carb and clean/rebuild as needed. clean out the gas tank with BB's (take the tank out, pour in some bbs with gas and seafoam and shake it around, pour it out and rinse good with more gas/seafoam).
Replace all fuel and vac lines, clamps fuel filter. if you have a vaccum fuel petcock, replace it with a manual one. Verify mechanical and ignition timing. Check timing chain slack/tension. There should be a spec here in the tech section for all that. Adjust valves.
Using a new spark plug and when its dark out, attach the plug wire to the plug. ground the electrode against the head and turn the engine over. you should see a hard blue spark and hear it snap snap snap. if you see a weak yellow spark, the coil is no good. DONT TOUCH THE METAL OF THE PLUG!. HOLD IT BY THE RUBBER OF THE BOOT WITH A PAIR OF RUBBER HANDLE PLIERS OR YOU WILL GET THE SHOCK OF YOUR LIFE!
If you do all this and it still runs like a turd, there is a deeper problem somewhere. I hope all this helps and good luck!

Don't forget, check variator, rollers and guides for flat spots and wear. Replace if needed.

ok guys, heres what happened. strange but true. so i get home and tear into it. the starter solenoid died somwhere along the path today... I started her up and took it for a spin and it was about the same . brought it back and started looking at a few things .I fixed the connection to the coil it was an expanded clip that connects, i smashed it down and it was much tighter on there. so I think that problems fine. For some reason I had the carb heater thing unplugged so i plugged that in and seemed to make a little difference. I then started messing around with the carb richness. I was really getting frustrated and so then i decided I would try to adjust it while I was giving it wot. After about 45 seconds it jsut opened up. I think that adjusting this while runnign fuel thru the carb may have disloged something in the main. now I am back up to my normal 20 - 25 mph. So basicallay I think the main was plugged. and now im cruising at about what I was at when I started this project, slow slow slow. 20-25 mph scooter, too slow to drive in traffic. I think im gonna just do the bbk performacne kit from ecoscooters, get the new rollers in there and a bbk fuel filter and see where im at. The oil on this thing is nasty, i never changed it but i never drove it much. the mileage on the odo was at 300 but ... it was disconnected and had been crashed so I have since fixed it and it is now measuring proper mileage. I have no idea how many miles this thing has on it but it has never had an oil change and its an 03, at least im guessing. I dont think it honestly has that much mileage, the odo had 323 on it when i bought , one of the reasons i bought it and didnt realize until after that it wasn't the real mileage. It could very well be the variator, when i rev it on the stand it goes thru a cycle.. like say (i dont have a tach but..) 2500 rpms then down to 15000 then back up to 2500 as the rear tire increases. not sure if thats normal.
so here I am, gonna try the bbk and some new rollers. I'll let you know how it goes.

For some reason I had the carb heater thing unplugged so i plugged that in and seemed to make a little difference. Yeah I think that's the reason it was bogging. It's an auto enricher. The thing was off so you were always in rich mode. It warms up and leans out the mixture. Rich when cold and leaner when the engine warms up.

So are the fleabay bbk / head kits that bad ? cant beat the price compared to echoscooter.
