Once you get used to having a welder, you won't know how you functioned without one. Some things that would be really tough to repair become easy to do. Mine have saved me from replacing parts or paying a welder on scooters, cars, lawnmowers, and more... not to mention all of the custom projects that just aren't possible without one. Flux Core is a good way to start, and may be all you ever need depending what you get into. They make things pretty simple, mostly just selecting a wire (usually 0.030" or 0.035"), setting a wire speed, and voltage. Something like the HF welder can handle most tasks you'll do with steel. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/11086/welding-advice-tips-soughtThis thread is about building a different fuel tank, but Clank gave some good tips when I was struggling with metal that I should have switched to MIG for. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/10545/larger-fuel-tank-ideas-build

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't look like I'll be getting a welder anytime soon..

Installed the cracked mirror just because it looks better than the chrome ones. Got my second headlight which was supposed to be identical to the first, but instead has a shorter heatsink and an unpainted bracket. Oh well, wired it up to the high beam switch on the left controls which I was finally able to install. Next is horn/siren and blinkers. Also variator nut arrives tomorrow along with loc tite.. Also my Ford COP and maybe my new manifold. And the phone mount holds my Harbor Freight multimeter really nicely, so that's a bonus.

Got one myself. Absolutely pleased with it. Yeah Clank advised me to get my wire from a welding store. That was before I bought it from Home Depot. But, the Home Depot wire isn't that bad. Definitely a good buy... The welder.

Always make sure you have a good ground. No paint or rust. Never touch your ground connecter with your welding tip while welding. Always turn the welder off to cut and adjust the wire on the tip. Probably not even needed. But just in case. Don't weld around flammables or pets. Get a automatic helmet. Some 1/8 inch steel to practice your beads with. A wire brush. And I recommend buying a welding magnet while your at harbor freight. Then just fuse the shit out of some steel. Next thing you know you'll be spot welding with no gloves or a helmet. J/k disregard that last sentence.

I wonder if I could buy an old exhaust header pipe for like 20 bucks to use as a cheapo straight pipe without ruining my muffler..

Sure, you could try it,but will likely lose HP and the neighbors will hate you..I remember a well known German tuner posted a big dyno sheet of GY6 50 exhausts on a slightly modded motor, stock won!Was a name brand euro scoot though,,food for thought...

I wonder if there's a clamp on footpeg or something that could go onto the front shocky thing. Like this, but with less burnouts:

There are clamp on footpegs. They'll come up on google. Not sure how much clearance there is for a clamp up there so investigate that before you buy anything. Also, sit on the scoot and put your feet there and consider if that would be a comfortable riding position. Mine are right at the curve in the frame, just below floorboard level, and they're very comfortable for me at 6'2". The drop makes a big difference in leg room. Mine are welded on, but maybe you could come up with a bolt on setup.

Torqued my variator on to 40 ft/lbs and just zipped the clutch on with the impact because no way to hold it still enough for the torque wrench. Loc-tite on everything. Ain't nothin gonna fall off now. The clearcoat I put on the variator ran a bit because I did a coat too heavy.. Oh well.
