The snow is fun during the holidays. It is the only 'white' Xmas I am getting here. It is raining now. I did not have a Christmas. I spent the time plumbing, installing a small 6 gallon point of use WH and a new sink. I am slowly making progress on the project. I need another fitting. I got a card from one sister and a phone call from another. Not a single peep from my 2 children. The EX has poisoned their minds. She has money, I don't, so who are they going to hang around with... I used XP for a long time then used W-7 Thin PC for a while. The W-7 Thin PC was horribly crippled. It was meant for workstation terminals with a large server network for business. It was absolute crap for home use. I installed W-7 recently on both of my computers. They are both identical machines with a new 120G SSD in each for OS installation. I have Home on one and Pro on the other. The Pro was an easy install, the Home version was a nightmare, still is a nightmare. WARNING! -Don't buy anything Microsoft 'Home'. W8 was a mobile OS. they fixed it up a bit with 8.1 to run on a PC. My son the IT man says it is OK but did not recommend it for me. W-10 is free because they are going to flood you with adds and spyware and charge you for adding functionality and leased software. A big F- in my book. BEWARE! Nothing that MS does for 'free' is going to turn out well for the user. I could use a good refurbished laptop. I saw a few b4 xmas but a lot were running chrome. I want an old one with W-7Pro to use in the shop etc.

190mech I haven't tried mint. I've run Ubuntu in the past and liked it. My duel p4 machines screamed on Linux compared to xp. For my personal use I have one program that I need windows for. And to get access to the company server I have to use IE. I can't get logged in with chrome or Firefox. Almost everything I do I can do on Linux. I'll have to try a windows emulator and see how they work

I have 18Mbps up and down with fiber but I frequently find my speed limited by the server that is downloading the files, usually 2-3Mbps.
I have a recent Ubuntu disc around here somewhere.

I've got 150Mbps down. I can go at ~15MBps on really good servers and many will go at 2-3MBps. Are you sure your downloads are 2-3Mbps Frank? There are 8 bits in a byte, so 2-3MBps would be about 18Mbps. 2-3Mbps would only be 250-375KBps. Usually download dialogues report in bytes rather than bits. ISPs like to use bits because it sounds so much faster with those big numbers.

My downloads are slow at times. I think the reading is Mbps but I will have to check next time I download a PDF or something. I can get much higher speeds through my ISP, my 18/18Mbps service is basic and much more than I need. All I need is Netflix streaming etc. I live right next to the first rollout service for Google fiber in KC KS and they have not got it installed in my city yet. They keep saying construction delays.... Google LIES.
I have been in computers since before there were PCs. I know all about bits, bytes, words Dwords...etc. I got burned out on programming and learning new languages every year.

I kinda figured you knew that, and more than I know. I'm just not used to seeing actual d/l in bits.

bits and 8 bit bytes are not quite the same thing. It all comes down to bits per second when encryption, compression, and packet protocols are involved. Speed does not really equate to bytes per second in any meaningful way.
BTW, we are about ready for beer bottles or champagne bubbles for the new year.

and in many cases you can also adjust the stream flow yourself,, in Netflix, if you go into your settings, you can pick your speed, some people have data caps and this allows you to decrease your flow when you reach your limit,,, lets say you only are getting 720p.. might be just a setting,, i have mine set a max,, that's ultra high def 7meg per hour. as i reach my limit i will go in and drop it to basic,, that's.07 per hour, but you cant get a better pic than 480, each movie will only use 1.3 meg, instead of 10meg. if any of you haven't checked your setting . do so, you might not be getting all you want,, RAMBLING--- sorry for getting a little of subject
