Wow. But at least it's coming along. Once you get that tune dialed in then you're good to go on the Polini theme, yeah? Almost there!

Messing with the timing is about my least favorite thing to do on this scoot, but I've checked and double checked everything and now I'm ready to really make use of this variable timing! I'm setting the stator to 28 degrees BTDC which will give me 16 degrees BTDC at high RPM (By choosing a 12 degree retard curve). Much more advancement for low RPM power and 2 degrees safer than what Polini recommends (18 deg) for this kit. Should really bring it back to life and also keep it from heating up too much at WOT. It does get overly hot when cruising at WOT for a while. Hopefully everything I've done- the new Polini head with correct sized combustion chamber (I still need to deal with this wide squish), the Grand Sport piston (still needs replaced as I've been driving it broken), the fuel pump, SIP fast flow tap, fuel regulator, and finally the variable timing Smart Booster should all add up to an engine that's strong down low yet still comfortable at WOT. I sure hope so anyway- I've put an awful lot of effort into it with still a few more things to tweak...

I've uncovered- and happy to say, SOLVED- a pretty big issue today! With months, weeks, hours of research and reading I've come to learn for a while now that these Vintage beasts are pretty picky about the flywheel/pickup alignment. Add in some even more sensitive aftermarket electronics and it can be become a real nightmare to get everything just right... For some reason when I switched back to the OG Piaggio flywheel, it was rubbing just a tiny bit on the stator when I tightened everything down. Thank goodness it did because it uncovered a pretty big flaw that I believe to be a major contributor in my electronic headaches to date. It was the pickup that was rubbing on the inside of the flywheel and it revealed a major misalignment! I realize it might be difficult to tell exactly what's going on in this pic so I cleaned up my other (stock) flywheel and made some marks on it so you can see what was happening... The BLACK dotted lines are where my pickup should be aligned to. The RED dotted lines show where my pickup was actually at. No Bueno! This was causing all kinds of issues such as misfires and what really got me digging deep was an intermittant spark which just turned into no spark the last time I fitted the flywheel after adjusting the timing. My solution? Well, I couldn't really space the flywheel further out because I would lose the lapped friction fit that it needs. So how do I situate the pickup coil further in? My solution was to cut two layers out of the steel stack behind the pickup coil... After filing everything smooth and cleaning it up and reinstalling the pickup coil I now have a good, strong, reliable spark. Yes! This is HUGE for me! I think I can trace the start of these issues to waayyy back in the beginning of this build when I sheared a flywheel key on the second start after it's total re-build from stock. With a brand new aftermarket crank and an Ebay flywheel to boot, it should've been lapped on from the get-go. Fast forward to another key munching and a chooched up crankshaft and a LOT of lapping later and hopefully this issue is done haunting me. I should've been on to the Polini paint job by now! Hehe

I'm happy for you! I know it has to feel great after all the time you've spent trying to figure out ignition issues among other things. Now I'll just grab my popcorn and wait for wheelie and high speed videos.

Thanks Brent! Jeez it really has been a saga with this thing. I appreciate everyone who followed along and supported me through all of this. There were some really rough times and the positive support here kept me from just unloading this thing on Craigslist a few times. Seriously! Now that the ignition is working properly I can finally dial in the jetting. Before it would just foul plugs but now I should be able to get it running properly. Here's a couple vids from last night. Of course they're low quality and not edited lol. The camera really picks up the piston slap clearly. It's not nearly that noticeable in person.

Yeah Oldgeek dooo eeettt! I've made so many mistakes and dug into every inch of this thing that I think someone else could read this thread and save themselves about half the time and trouble. Well hopefully my trials and tribulations will save somebody a lot of headaches haha.

I'm starting off using curve "F". Now that I've straightened out the ignition, I should be able to re-install the TTO tach now and see exactly what's going on. So many things are falling into place now!

I'm so glad you were able to work out your biggest bug. That's been haunting you for awhile. I'm sure you'll get it dialed in and have a reliable ride soon.

These Vespas must be a blast to ride around on or you wouldn't have put so much effort into it. Be able to take your fairings off like that and adjust things must be great. Slap em back on and go like that. That vintage scooter sound changing gears Looks addicting!

FINALLY!
I have done some research abd really only heard good things about the variable timing thingie.
Piston slap is just a P200 thing.
Just ride it hard so it cannot slap!
