Does anyone know of a good system to learn how to speak and write in English? I was taught English in American public schools and apparently I was taught another language other than English. Any time write or say anything somehow it comes back completely different than what I said or wrote. This is very very frustrating in day to day life. Either I have no idea what I'm saying or I'm an alien speaking in a foreign tongue that I think is English. But no one seems to understand what I'm saying. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Clank

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean. I just read what you wrote and it does look like English but I don't understand what the actual problem is. Besides I always thought American is not English. I always thought the Canadians or British speak real English and the Americans and Aussies have a language of their own.

I guess one easy way is to read books. Lots of books. encyclopedia, or Wikipedia whenever you're bored will help in sentence structure (well, maybe not Wikipedia as much...)

English professors will tell you that Americans speak much better English than they do in the UK. English spoken by many Brits is almost incomprehensible but then 'English' spoken by some of the younger Americans and groups is incomprehensible and painful to the ear also. Then consider those younger people that post like they text and their writing is unreadable. Some of us here in the USA speak American, some Mexican, some Chinese, Japanese, etc, etc, and some can't speak anything comprehensible. The English speak something called English, and Australians, -well they speak something else but comprehensible at least...
Personally growing up listening to Walter Cronkite and having a teacher for a mother helped me even though I was practically ineducable due to memory problems. My spelling is crap due to voracious reading of books published both in the USA and the UK. My pronunciation is crap because I learned many words without ever hearing them pronounced. My initial guess at their pronunciation is stuck in my memory no matter how many times I hear them. French based words are a nightmare...

"Rosetta Stone" might have an English version. I know it's for Americans who want to learn other languages. Could give that a try.

Don't worry about it, you don't need that crap. Work towards Spanish and maybe Chinese. That'll get you places!

What I hate is when people use "ur" or the wrong form of your/you're/there/their/etc.

My main pet peeve is when someone posts a technical question and can't be bothered to use comprehensible language. It can be difficult to troubleshoot with perfect English, but it's a real chore trying to decipher what at first appears to be gibberish into technically oriented information to try and answer a question or provide some form of advice. We are all guilty of making typographical errors or misspellings. I use words like "dunno" (don't know) more frequently than perhaps I should. I understand when someone is not a native English speaker, and often am impressed by how well they manage to write. I certainly couldn't make an intelligible post beyond greetings or asking where a bathroom is in any other language. It's only when it appears that a person looking for help isn't willing to take their time to ensure that their post makes some sense that I don't get it.
Regarding what I believe was the original idea of this thread, I don't know that anyone can be of much use there. Misunderstandings are especially easy online, when there is no tone of voice, gesturing accompaniment, or other indication of meaning beyond blocks of text. I like to use smileys to aid in getting the idea across when something is a joke, or add lol (I know it is generally capitalized). Sometimes things have to be reworded to avoid confusion. Sometimes you can do everything right and still be misinterpreted. We all read into things a bit different and have our own takes on things and to make it more "interesting" some people just like to argue or "stir".

Thanks Clank Hey clank maybe dislexic? I am sure that is spelled wrong but I can't get close enough with swipe on my phone for it to give me the correct spelling lol. It is not speaking English it is trying to get it from your head into the keyboard. I can think and speak way faster than I can type. Ps never had any trouble understanding you. May need clarification if it is something I'm not familiar with. Pss welcome to the 2t world lol

Dyslexia I dont know if you are referring to the comprehension of what you are saying or people not understanding your words. Can you give us an example? How old are you if you don't mind my asking? Reason being is if your an older gent this could be a sign of a stroke. It could also be a sign of you losing your hearing. ps welcome to the real powa (power) 2t !!! Life's fast with mixed gas !!!
