Smoking at ALL TIMES like a chimney and tapping at the piston, head, line. Trying to see if it's a head or wrist pin or what. It's eating oil at an astronomical rate so it's getting into the chamber and burning somehow. youtu.be/p1XNPa605lgSee what you think by my video. It does run well though oddly enough!

New rings or valve guides

What kills me is it runs GREAT. The tapping comes and goes at certain RPM. I'm not having the typical compression issues Ive seen in the past with rings.

I've had oil control rings go bad once and it looked like I was on fire or fogging for mosquitoes, but it still ran mostly OK.

I feel like its in the head the way it runs. Its not doing anything typical of low compression even with a bad valve seat. It chugs like a locomotive smoking along until I shut it off, it doesn't die, plenty of power.

It's gonna be hard to know without pulling it apart.
Could be a valve seal. That shouldn't rob you of power, but may allow oil in to be burned. Wouldn't really explain the noise either, but it may be a couple of issues.

Sounds like piston slap, that means worn rings,,Is the airfilter shot and letting dust in??Can only smoke from ring seal or worn intake guide and seal, all from eating dirt..Tear it down, take pics and tell us what you see..Shouldnt be too pricey if you do the work yourself...

You think the noise is valve lash from a secondary incident coincidence also going on with the head since it has a possible valve issue? I'm gonna pull it down within a week, just shooting at stars until I do so I look for certain things. I bought it yesterday off the LetGo app (love that freaking app!) in a sea of TTR125's for $1000-$1500 this one was advertised as locked up first $200 gets it. I brought it home and spun the crank with a socket. It was pretty much stuck where it ran out of oil, so I know there is ring wear. I've been riding it all day, putting a quart of oil in for about every 1/4 tank of gas....LOL....Who cares it runs and was only $200. I can rebuild the entire top end for $200 off ebay and still make 2 times my money when I sell it...... after I'm done with it this summer that is.

Forget everything else in this thread. I know the problem. It just wants to be a 2T... and who can fault it for that?

Forget everything else in this thread. I know the problem. It just wants to be a 2T... and who can fault it for that? The best and most plausible solution EVER. 1 two stroke in the family is enough to eat me to death in oil cost, I'm glad the other 4 are 4 strokes LOL. That one though..... varoooooooommmmmm.

Love the TTR's My first dirt bike was a 250 TTR. Loved it. Got drunk one night, and rode it DOWN the stairs of a local abandoned apartment complex.

1 thing I noticed today...... The noise goes away at higher rpm. Starting to sound like the noise is valve lash. If the head is indeed screwed up it would do all this. I'm not particular either way which it is as long as it gets fixed. The jug, piston, and rings off ebay are 56 bucks, the head is 3 times the price.

Usually a head can be repaired by replacing the valves and guide seals, need to check the cam chain also as they tend to wear out and make a slapping noise once the cam chain adjuster runs out of travel..
