I'm trying to find out what besides a bicycle can be used on the roads in Louisiana that doesn't require a driver's license, permit, insurance, plates and all that paper work. In the future I want to get a good jeep but until I can afford that I need a way to get mobile now. I'm not going to get a DL, insurance, plates, registration and all just for something that may be 1 step up from a bicycle. I will do all that for something like a jeep and when its necessary. I've been reading into Louisiana legislation and been in contact with DMV.org trying to get this figured out and wanted to ask here to see if anyone can provide any further help. Here are the links I have been studying so far: web01.dps.louisiana.gov/OMV1.nsf/1b2fc6edb63de9b1862564800069f248/f49e283fc26019e8862564ae00546c22www.moped2.org/mstates.htm#Louisianawww.dmv.org/la-louisiana/other-types.php (On this page it states that "With the exception of motorized bicycles, a driver's license is not mandatory to operate motorcycles with less than 5 horsepower." But I am trying to get this verified and find in the Louisiana law books where this is actually stated. DMV.org has forwarded my email to the LA OMV and I am waiting for a response. web01.dps.louisiana.gov/omv1.nsf/58c968bd569b099986256cdc000806eb/9ce8bc7aab5dafe1862564ae00588dab?OpenDocumentI still cannot determine what other than an actual bicycle can be used without all the legalities attached. I may try to just ask a local police officer if I see one but hopefully someone here can give some information. It would be great if I could use something better than just a bicycle to save on time and all the pedaling. I'm just trying to figure this out before I buy something and find out I gotta do a month of driver's ed, tests, license fees, insurance and all that stuff before I can use it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! I'm 29 by the way in case anything was age specific.

most places need a DL to even ride a 49cc scooter as a moped. here in Michigan you can get a "moped license". do you not have a license period or is it suspended? not trying to be nosy but it will make a difference

I don't want one until I can actually afford the jeep I want which could be years away.

I think your gonna be better off getting the license and just buying a scooter and riding it. getting the license cant cost that much. only $35 + testing here in Michigan and good for 4 years. cant imagine not having a way to work cept a bicycle. I think you're going to have problems getting anything on the road without one

Not to mention that you don't want to get your jeep and then tell the insurance company that you have zero years of driving history. You need that drivers history, even if it's only on a moped.

I highly doubt I would ever take it far from home so I wouldn't need or want anymore than just enough insurance to make me legal. I don't like driving because I have too many anxieties but I do need to go to places sometimes and having something more than a bike would be nice.

Do they make exceptions based on age or any circumstances? You'd think for people 30+ they'd let you just pay the fees and give you the licence and plates.

I don't mean this in a mean way or to criticize but if you don't like driving, then why spend a whole bunch of money on a vehicle that you aren't really going to enjoy? might better just get the license and get a scooter. lot cheaper and just as fun (or more) than driving. id rather drive my scoot than the car most times (and I really like my car)

I know if you go the moped license route here its just $15 and a written test plus your $15 sticker good for 3 years

There are people who buy vehicles for collections and never drive them. There are people who buy older model cars, fix them up and only display them. If I want to buy a jeep and let it sit on my lawn forever what business is it of yours or anyones? I don't mean that in a mean way either. My point is even if I were to use it just a few times a year, I don't see why I can't have the one I want even if its an expensive jeep.

I wouldn't let it set outside. you WILL have mouse issues, chewed wiring, etc.

You'd think for people 30+ they'd let you just pay the fees and give you the licence and plates. There are enough horrible drivers on the road with testing in place. I don't particularly want to be on the road with just anyone that thinks they know what they're doing and decides to go for a drive. I don't mean that as any offense to you. You may be the best driver ever for all I know. I've seen enough brainless moves by other motorists that have had some sort of training to understand the need for testing though. I don't think you'll find any way to just be handed a license with a small payment. The only exception would be if your state offers a moped operator's permit. In my state, MD, a moped permit would basically require a written test of some basic traffic info, passing an eye test, and payment. I'm not sure what LA offers, but I would advise contacting them directly vs DMV.org. Nothing wrong with that site, but I'd want to know from an actual state official if it were me. I think if you rode a little and saw the ridiculous things that other motorists do, the tests, practice, or even classes may seem less pointless. I don't know what your anxieties are, but I have what can be pretty severe social anxiety. That kept me from getting my motorcycle license for a long time... something like 10 years from the time I wanted one initially till I finally just did it. It was worth every bit of BS to have it and, as usual with anxieties, none of it was nearly as bad as my brain would have allowed me to believe it would be. Once you have the tests done, you should never have to take another, as long as you don't have your license revoked or something (DUI, lots of tickets, etc...) so you won't have to worry about it again. The worst you have to do is renew, and that can even be done online or by mail sometimes.

I know there are some states that don't require all the legalities for scooters and mopeds but most of them are pretty far away from me and I wasn't planning on moving. I've been thinking about it and I may just go ahead and do it all. Insurance for a moped would be cheap, right? As long as its around $10/month I can handle that right now. I hate the fee they charge for a piece of plastic with your name and picture on it. That should be a lot less in my opinion but its only once every 4 years.
In Louisiana I don't think they do moped licences so they put them under the regular driver's license category. Since I don't own a car right now I'd have to pay another fee for the skills test right? I doubt they'll let me use a moped for the skills test. My other issue is how long do the class requirements take? The written test is most likely common sense to me at this point so I'm hoping the class isn't something thats like months long.
Again I'll basically only go ahead and do this if I am absolutely sure there is nothing else besides a bicycle I can use on the roads without all the legalities attached. If I can determine with certainty there isn't then I'll go ahead and just do it.
