This is a build thread for a not as cool and mostly infuritating 1965 Vespa Allstate. Sorta.
One day 2 years ago I was on usedvictoria and I stumbled upon a 1974 Vespa VBC Super. It looked kinda haggard and was $1500 Canadian Pesos. My girlfriend is in love with these, and even after explaining how its old and not as reliable as a good old modern twist and go she didn't care.. So being me I bought it for her as a surprise.
What a rabbit hole I stumbled upon.
So as it turns out it was a Vietscoot. Filled with bondo and newspaper, Re welded fork, pretty much every thing that could be hacked together was. The engine ran though so I hunted for a better frame to try and save whatever I could off it and make all the money I lost back. That was dumb of me but more on that later.
So after a hunt I found this in the back of a cycle salvage shop.
Not much to look at, legguard cracked headset cracked, wrong forks, basically trash. but after $200 it was my trash. 1965 Allstate.
So I started welding
and welding
and welding
and painting
and painting
For what seemed like eternity. But in the end I had a nice platform to start from. after ordering a bunch of new bajaj and indian parts, and so many that were wrong it started going together.
I decided to try and use the VBC engine out of this hunk of scrap metal (or should I say bondo)
Ended up with this beaut.
So I shouldnt have used that motor. We insured it this week and I took it for a drive. it "runs" but the crank seals leak, the shift cruicform is toast, the flywheel has no threads to remove it, the crank keyway is not a thing, the cylinder head threads have been "repaired" and the first time I tried to drive it the clutch arm broke.
Good thing I am a machinist
So i'm tearing the motor apart and will be fixing things and trying to save the cases. I figure you can all watch me struggle and curse and it will be at least entertaining for someone. Right now I need to find some parts new or used so hopefully see my girlfriends happy face vs my own angry one.
Im probably going to do some sort of DIY reed valve and D slide carb, and HOPEFULLY there are no more surprises, but heck at this point if I had to just throw the whole engine in the trash, that would not surprise me in the least.
