I'm back, with a new toy... Honda Gyro X

Sorry I've been away from the forum so long, I gave up on trying to sort out clutch springs for my Suzuki at the beginning of winter and haven't done anything scooter related since

But that changed today!
I picked up 2 trailer loads of Honda powered toys this morning, inc a couple go karts, 85 ATC125M and most relevant to the forum this beast



Running the plate it seems to be a 1990 Honda Gyro X, 49cc with the correct amount of strokes, worryingly it looks like it was registered as a motorcycle rather than a moped, so hopefully I can get it on a moped rego!!

It only needed fresh gas and a jump start to get going, so we gave it a half ass wash and I took off on a test ride, got 5k from home when it died on me and then would only run at less than 1/4 throttle, managed to ride it home feathering the throttle at a blistering 7kph ha.
All signs pointed to a blocked main jet, at least with the stock clutch it would move under its own power unlike the time I had to push my Suzuki home.

Quick squirt of carb cleaner and it was away again, it's a real laugh to ride, nothing like my 2 wheeled Suzukis!
It only tops out at 45k but man it feels like it's flying and yeah I think I'm in love.

Got several thumbs up from random people too haha.





I'm going to go done on Monday and attempt to register it as a scooter, if I can't get it changed from motorcycle it'll be a tidy up and on sell project as I don't have a bike license and the rego costs + 6 month safety inspections are $$$.

If luck is on my side I'm thinking something like a 70cc kit, big carb, custom pipe, 12x10 or 10x8 ATV rims from eBay with stretched scooter tyres on the back, 10" or 12" Dio or Ruckus front end with disk brake etc, the stock 8" front 6" rear wheels with tiny drums leave a lot to be desired!

Something like these but knowing me rougher and cheaper






They seem to have a bit of a following in Japan, I'm struggaling to find much info on what parts fit and what size wheel/tyre combos people run.

I have seen 1 or 2 customized Gyros over here. They are expensive, even used they go for $1500-2000. To find parts for them is not an easy task. ThaiGyro knows a great deal about the Gyros.

Thanks to Yahoo Japan blogs I'm finding more and more places that specialise in custom Gyro parts, but there's not many that ship outside of Japan.

Can get a lot from WeBike, but the prices jump a lot!
Can get these 10x8" rims with 205/30r10 tyres to my door, 1 week shipping for NZ$500

Add $150 for the matching 12" front rim and tyre, stock is 8" front and 6x tiny rears.
Really hope I can get this thing registered on Monday!
The main thing I can't seem to find is a pipe, but I've got a few ideas there.

I'm thinking the worst of it is going to be wheels and a couple Gyro specific parts like the handle bar mount.

It seems the bulk of the engine parts are shared with a model of Dio so should be easy enough for me to get hold of here in NZ or from racing planet.

Hey Raizer! The tires and wheels above from NZ...are from Japan. NZ$500 is about $375 USD currently. Too much money! We can buy Gyro parts here in Thailand from Japan sites, but they are too expensive also. (WeBike and Global Racuten) A company called "Sparkys" has ads. Could not find them web-wise.
My tires and wheels are similar as above, but I paid $180 for the set, here in Thailand, second hand.

Look at US golf cart stuff. You will find 4 lug wheels which means you need adapters. You would need Gyro 6 lug to 4 in 40mm width. Any wider is too wide...and wobbles badly, plus too much bearing side load. There are fender flares available too.

Disk brakes is great idea! No one makes them. I too am looking for alternatives. I have looked at mountain bike stuff and ATV, but am going to play with my drum hubs. Sounds weird, but I am thinking I can machine off the shaft portion, turn them backwards to get the flanges close to the CVT case, and mount disk to inside, wheels outside, using a stud mount. IT has been done here...I will try to find pictures and owner.

Many parts and Gyro's posted. A guy named Eakk Eakk buy large quantities of old Gyro parts and knows a good amount. My wheels and adapters came from him.

Oh, things like handle bar mounts are fairly simple. Mine are stock still, but converting to Honda Grom/MX5 front ends are a near bolt up affair and look bad-ass. I cannot recall the specs, but shaft sizes are the same, bearings must be Gyro taper and a spacer on the bottom...or something similar.
I am going to use a flat mountain bike bar with goose neck...fits right on the steering shaft.

Yeah that's $500nz delivered from WeBike Japan, there Spunky's wheels but from what I could see Spunky's won't ship outside Japan.
Will have a look at golf kart wheels etc, even eBay ATV alloys work out expensive once tyres and shipping are taken into account.


I've been looking at a lot of posts on Yahoo Japan and Minkara, seems like Zoomer/ruckus parts can be adapted to convert to front disk, Google translate leaves a bit to be desired when trying to find specs though.

Have seen a few posts where people have moved the park lock from the stem to under the rear, looks like it would make it much easier for the bars.

Pending rego success I may have just arranged buying a couple more Gyros with dead engines but good plastics and other parts etc... the sickness is growing

Turns out it's likely older than 1990 too, apparently the 8" front wheel puts it somewhere from 82 to 85?

Hmmm, not sure about the AF24.  The parts looks the same, but have different bore and stroke.  The Gyro is 40 x 39.3mm.  The AF24 and others show as 39 x 41.4mm. We have compared a few cylinders which appear the same except the bore. My guess is that the port timing variation is in the cases.  In other words, Honda used cylinder blanks from the same casting, but different liners.

The actual part swapping is hard to get a real handle on without service manuals.  One site lists these as the same (39x41.4): Honda Dio (AF18), Honda Tact 50 (AF24), Honda Dio (AF27), Honda Dio (AF28), Honda Dio 50 (AF30), and many others. Most Dio's have 12mm piston pins, but the AF16, I believe, had 10mm. Ever so slight differences...many ways to achieve restricted performance.


My Service Manual is coming today, finally, though in Japanese. (My GF speaks and reads Thai/English/Japanese) I have only measurements from my engine, no factory data, until the manual comes.  The other Honda's that are possible all have 10mm piston pins and close but not exact port timing.  Malossi lists their BBK (31-6170) as fitting Lead (AF01), Scoopy (??engine number), Vision (AF29), SRX Shadow (AF42) Gyro (TA-01), Peugeot Metropolis SC50 as the same kit number.
