You could remove the end from the speedo, and then rotate the tire to see if the cable is turning. If it's turning at the speedo, it may be the gauge itself. If not, you can unscrew the ends of the cable and see if it actually turns at the opposite end when one end is turned. If not, the cable is broken. You could also remove the speedo puck from the wheel and make sure the tabs in there are aligned with the wheel as they need to be if you're not seeing the cable being turned by the wheel motion.

I have one (2012 model year) but it is down waiting for an engine upgrade and a frame straightening. 50cc is just not enough to push one of these.
My balance is no good also, I fall over to the left all the time and had to quit riding two wheel vehicles.
Maintenance and repairs are always needed on any scoot.
The DongFang reverse trike is heavy and it has increased rolling resistance due to the toe-in required for the dual front wheels. Mine had a large toe-in from the factory and was unstable at 30MPH or above. I reduced it to about 1/32" measured at the wheel rims. The front frame is weak where the rear upper A-frame attaches. It requires reinforcement. Fit and finish is only fair.
The R-trike is very stable in ice and snow. It won't slide out from under you. It will slide though...
My speedo works but it is way off. I may replace it with an electronic unit at some point.

Yeah mine is a 2011 model seems pretty stable for me at 30 35 mph.... I had to rig up a taillight switch one was woring the other works but is loose on the brake and the lil tab on the brake that works it broke at some time before me... I tried to get the brake handle off but it wont come off so I had to rig something and it works used a horn button from an automotive store and a zip tie seems to work well currently starter switch doesn't work ot until I figure that out I'm gonna rig a switch for it.... I ran all the crappy gas out of it it had been in storage a while put fresh gas in it and it runs great now.... I can still kick start it and my battery is good.... and I'm replacing the stupid junk fuse holer with a much better one as soon as I get to a automotive place.....

I replaced the stock 7A fuse with a 10A circuit breaker and a good ATC fuseholder. My extra scoot gas goes in the lawnmower (if it is free of ethanol or water) or gets diluted into a 3/4 full tank on my van. Small engines don't do well with ethanol. The last time I checked a standard brake handle, stop switch, with master cylinder was available as an assy. Parts are usually available as assemblies for economic reasons. I have made a lot of mods to my scoot, some worked well, others not so good. My sig has a link or try: 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/7806

I worked on one of these a few years ago, and it definitely needed the BBK installed to be able to move. There is a gear on the axle of most. The gear is inside the housing, and can move out of position. It should turn when the wheel rotates, but if moved, or not engaged, it will not turn and the cable will not rotate. The gear is pretty flat to fit inside the housing and can be removed and checked for damage to the lug/flat that makes it rotate. My bet is a standard china scooter gear would work. There is a name for the spiral style of these two gears but memory is like Frank's balance - sometimes functional.. and otherwise. Peugot used this style in their rear wheel drive axles to lower the hump in the middle of the floor pan. Brain faaaddddeeee... The gear rotates a gear with a square hole at the other end for the cable. If the cable is allowed to move out of the square hole, it will not rotate. The whole mechanism is kind of sloppy, but in many cases can be made to work again by disassembly, cleaning, re-greasing(light grease) and re-assembly. You can observe the cluster end of the cable with the scoot in motion to determine if the cause is in the cluster or below. Disconnect and let it hand out so it is visible.. take for a spin. Problem with the one I worked on was exposure to rain had rusted a lot of the switches and made them dysfunctional and rusty. The fuel pump was also weak, IMO. Took forever to pump fuel to the float bowl and it had to be pumped from the tank mounted under the floorboard. Looking back, a primer pump as used by outboard motors in-line would have been very useful. Built right into the fuel line, you would have fuel in the carburetors after just a few squeezes. tom
