4 stroke exhausts cost a small fortune dont add much performance but they do change the sound and look.
By upgrading to the malossi kit will give you the most bang for the buck. I would put money into the variator for a higher gear ratio and better shifting . After that maybe upgrade the gears .
On a 2 stroke you have so many peformance choices and price points for pipes

Thanks. I'll stop looking for exhausts. The kit I ordered comes with a Malossi Multivar variator and a set of gears. I did notice that the variator doesn't appear to come with the outer fixed sheave, is there any point in replacing and/or upgrading that? I may order a replacement either way, just to have a full spare variator to swap in if needed. I went ahead and splurged even more and impulse bought a Reveno clutch. And here I thought I'd save a few bucks by dusting this thing off...
I'm kind of enjoying tinkering in the garage again with this scoot. I may start keeping my eye out for another one to tinker on, maybe a 2 stroke for more aftermarket availability.

Most variators have you buy the face separate . I try to buy the matching variator fan and pulley when possible . Usually the sizes pair up better and help you max out the full face of the variator.

Thanks. I just ordered what I hope is the correct one. Malossi doesn't list one that specifies that it will fit the c3. I ordered the 617152.

Parts are starting to arrive! Today, the cylinder kit, tuner, variator, belt, gears, and tires showed up. I'm still waiting on the outer half of the variator pulley, roller weights, and clutch. But I do have enough to get started and possibly finish installing the bbk and tuner this weekend.

I may hold off on installing the gears and see how it does without it since I think I'm more concerned about how well it does on hills than going insanely fast. Not sure I want to do a whole lot more than 50 mph on this thing anyway.

Just remember to only change one part at a time. I know we want to get it all done asap. But if you have a problem it's easier to isolate what it is.I You also get more of a feel for what's working.

Now I know it,s a four stroke it might be worth test fitting the new drive belt, some replacements are not exact copies of O.E. stuff,a longer/shorter belt will only add to your tuning problems Geoff

One piece at a time. Now I've got a Johnny Cash song stuck in my head. That is very good advice, something I'm definitely guilty of not following in the past, backfires on me almost every time too.
On the drive belt, I have a couple of new OEM Yamaha belts plus a slightly used one to fall back on if the Malossi belt gives me any grief.
Thanks.

Well this sucks! When I went to remove the bolt from the timing chain tensioner to reset it, the damned threads came out with it. I was able to find a used one on ebay that should be here in a couple of days.

Since I'm pretty much stuck waiting for the timing chain tensioner to show up, I fiddled around in the garage today cleaning up my mess from yesterday and putting away excess tools. I went ahead and installed a fresh air filter after deleting the metal screen on the back side, like I previously did with the old one. Also, yesterday I removed this thing that I have seen referred to as the "squid". Does anyone know what this thing actually does? I assume that it is some kind of emission device, it connects to the exhaust with a hose that runs to this filter looking thing, through another piece of hose to a metal device with an arrow on it, I guess that is a check valve, then another piece of hose that just tucks in with the wiring. Seems kind of pointless, I'm debating whether to put it back on.

Think that's the air filter for the air induction system. Emissions related.

Thanks. Now that I know what it is called, it made it easier to look it up. Apparently, it introduces fresh air into the exhaust to help it more completely burn any leftover hydrocarbons. I'm guessing that there must be a small catalytic converter inside the exhaust. I think I'll put it back on, it doesn't look like it would do anything to hurt performance beyond what the stock pipe already does, and I'm keeping that. The weight penalty can't be any worst than it hauling around my fat ___.

Think that's the air filter for the air induction system. Emissions related. The squid was me. No cat converter in the exhaust. If you remove it, make sure you plug the exhaust take off. here's the link Q*bert by Happypancake

Pictures from Saturday. Getting everything torn apart. I only had two hiccups, the first was a stubborn screw on the throttle linkage at the throttle body, that thing was way tighter than it should have been, actually a lot of the fasteners were way tighter than they should have been. The 3mm allen head on the screw stripped out, I wound up dremeling a slot for a big flat head screwdriver, then turned the screwdriver with a wrench. The second hiccup was the previously mentioned timing chain tensioner.
