After replacing the float needles you may need to lap them to get them to stop leaking. Baking soda toothpaste or just thick baking soda and water on a q-tip and lap the needle seat, clean w/ carb cleaner when your done. I went around and around with the carbs on mine.

Patience... If your intake boots are hardened you may need to heat them to get the carbs back on. I’d try to check that the carbs don’t leak after your repairs OFF the bike because they are a pain to get back on.

Yup they were hardened and the PO had bolted them on when a couple were misaligned. I had to heat em up just to let em get their shape back. And the airbox is a BITCH to get on/off too.

Look into wintergreen oil and acetone to permanently soften old hardened rubber.
Works great, used it on a few bits on old corollas.

Your best to pull the tank and leave it off until you get them dialed in. Just use a small fuel source for testing, like a oil tank from a scoot.

Mine had the Keihin cv carbs, I only needed to up the pilot by 2 sizes and it ran well.

Nice! Brings back great old memories of my cb Honda's,a 72 550 and a 71 750,both very similar to Ryan otts, along with the same issues.lol that was before your bike was brand new benji's! I did say old memories!😀 But we didn't call em cafe racers back then, we called em bobbers.when I watched your video,I said yep! Points, then I noticed what year you bike is.lol.I even built a stretched out striped down quad rear shocked, hillclimer out of a cb 750 and dirt bike frame I had!.😎 Now that was a Frankenstein...! Tryed killing me every time I rode it!😂 it looks like your a young guy and you are going to love that bike, but don't base speed on age of something or someone, lol.I get told simaler things about my kx250 that's kitted to a 295cc that I bought new in 1989 and still own and ride weekly.also when new people people see me pull my helmet and goggles off after ripping it up At the mx track or dunes..😂 57 years old, bald, big ass gray beard....I've been told that same thing! Damm,! Your/it's fast for its age! Ok enough of my book here. Watching this with enjoyment.😎

This actually isn't my first '70s Japanese bike. I've had a few street bikes when I was younger, and I cut my teeth on a yamaha xs650 special and a kawisaki kz650sr, as well as an older Yami 500 twin my buddy kept at my apartment. The xs650 had points and it ran great! The kawisaki had carb problems but it was fast.

Cool😎.Those are some sweet bikes you mentioned,I love em all.imagine what motorcycles would have evolved into if 2 stroke street bike were not outlawed in the states? The only reason I mentioned points was,I missed diagnosed a carb issue when it was the points😣

Ugh. More problems. As always haha.
The way I lowered the fork is interfering with mounting bars, so Im probably gonna do clip-ons. I got the carbs fixed I think, they ain't leaking and it seems to be good. My rear shocks showed up and installed em and it looks good, but I found the oem exhaust on one side is bad. Just fell off when I unbolted the support. So im looking at getting a new exhaust or maybe just going straight pipe. I kinda like the Mac 4-into-1 setup for these bikes but it's $300. A set of decent used oem pipes is like $150 or so. Ordered up some chrome emgo pod filters and a cheap universal cafe racer seat too. I also decided to hollow out the center frame where the battery and electronics go, so more work, and I'll probably want to paint the frame on this thing. It was free and I'm gonna end up spending a g-ball on it just to build it haha.

No such thing as a cheap project Benji. Sometimes you might get lucky with parts though. Came to this conclusion when I was pricing up an Aerox build a while ago. It would only make sense of the bike was free. But the time you renew all the engine internals, shocks tyres, exhaust, brakes you could buy a nice one.

Pics of it with more stuff Removed. I ordered a black "cafe racer" seat and a taillight/license plate holder combo, I think I'm gonna shorten the rear fender even more and remove it shorten the front. Also, I'm gonna hollow out the center frame section and relocate the batt and cdi n stuff, which means I'll want to paint the frame, and maybe the engine. More work, more money haha. These pics show the left side w/o the mufflers cuz it fell off when I unbolted the support bracket. I'm thinking of going with straight pipes now haha. The pile of removed parts keeps getting bigger.
