Nice update and really appreciate keeping us informed. Glad to hear you are making progress with your recovery. I'm sure it feels like forever. On a side note I recently read about a airbag jacket for riders that claim to provide protection in accidents. At first I thought it was a joke but they are actually available. Very expensive tho but I guess it could really pay for itself if something happens. Anyway glad your getting around some and feeling better.

Just got back from a follow up appointment for the shoulder in Baltimore. 1/2 a day driving and waiting for some x-rays and literally 2 minutes with the doctor. He said it's healing and from how I could move it I shouldn't need anymore physical therapy. I've got a PT appt for Friday, but I'm telling them that's the last one. I think they were already trying to do some extension stuff to keep me since my prescription ends Tuesday. Some of the folks in there seem to have been there for ages. They come in and do the exact same thing every day. I'm not gonna be that guy, but I'll show up Friday so they can do anything if they need to for their records like range of motion checks or condition questions and such instead of just ditching them like it sounds like most do. I'm not a people person, so it's a relief to know that part is about done.
Now I just have to hope the knee heals, keep stretching that and such and work on strength with the left arm. I asked the doc if weight limit for the arm was just if it hurts don't do it. He said yeah, it's kind of a common sense thing at this point.
On the way home there was an accident directly behind us on the Bay Bridge. My father was driving in the slow lane, doing about 45 in a 50. Most traffic was doing 45-50. Some fake Hummer (H2) came up behind us fast and cut the wheel hard to go around and slammed into the side of the bridge. I only saw the very end, but the sound of tires and metal got my attention. I can't stay away from crashes. Watched the GT500 crash, the next day I crashed, now a month or so later this one.

Might I suggest a Copperfit sleeve for your knee. A couple years ago, my elbow would not fully extend for some unknown reason. I wore a sleeve for about 3 months and it straightened out. I also wear one for occasional back pain. They allegedly improve circulation.

Today was my last day of PT for the shoulder. I wasn't sure how they'd handle it when I told them the doc said I had enough PT and today would be the last for me. It's a business after all and they're billing insurance for over $100 per appointment. No complaints. Just said good if I think I'm ready. They did an evaluation before I left and said that exercise is always good, but at this point routine activities are probably all I need to keep doing. I still plan to do some exercises and stretching though. Strength is not where I want it to be by a long shot. I've only been using 2lb weights for some stuff in therapy still and that's not even easy.
Speaking of billing; I looked over the 1/2" thick pile of bills and statements that I have so far last night. It looks like ~$10,600 worth of charges submitted to my health insurance so far. That should get marked down and paid till it's nowhere near that amount eventually, but it's always crazy seeing what these places try to charge.
When I think about what they've actually done for me, it's insane what their bills are. Each $800-1000 doc visit is 2-5 minutes with a doc and about 3 x-rays. $5,000 to lay in the bed at the first hospital for 4 hours with one bloodtest, an IV, x-rays, and a CT scan. I have 2 bills for slings, because I got one sling/swathe and one plain sling later. They charged $150 for the sling/swathe and $80 for the sling. The $80 sling looks like you put $0.25 in a gumball machine and it came out. It's that cheap and thin. It wasn't even the right size so I hardly wore it. So no surgeries, a little PT, prob 15 minutes with actual doctors so far and over $10,000 billed to insurance with more coming. Insurance will mark it down by a great deal, scoot insurance will cover $2500. It won't be nearly that bad what I end up with, but it's just nutty. If you remember I said the first ER contacted an ortho specialist that didn't know how to treat me and simply advised sending me to the other ER. I got a bill from him. I got into the wrong business. Can't imagine telling a customer I see what's wrong with their scooter but I don't know what to do so pay me $200 anyway (especially since it's literally just looking at a picture). Kinda got ya over the coals though, since we need medical care.

If there was an 'I feel your pain' button, we would all be pushing it. Glad you got insurance.

7 weeks post-crash now. Shoulder still hurts when used or moved certain ways, but I can use it for most normal tasks now. The knee is getting better. I've got almost 3 weeks till my follow up for it and am thinking about canceling that since the doc already said if it seems better at the follow up then I should be good to go without any further prodding. Pains are getting less, but I'm still using a cane and there's still plenty of stuff that does cause some pain. I've been doing low load long duration stretches for extension. Those hurt, but that's 10lb weight on the thigh for 30 minutes to make sure I can get full extension. I can pull my knee to a full bend now and it is still stiff but doesn't hurt like it did. Started riding the exercise bike a little. Only up to 10 minutes at a time, because I found that I get pain around the break after with even 10 minutes. The knee seems to be a really slow process, but is making progress. So yeah, not sure I want them to send another $1000 bill out when I don't think anything will be done but 3 more xrays and 5 minutes with the doc to say it sounds like I'm on the right track. The ligaments were what worried me, but again he said he's not gonna dive any deeper if I'm getting better by the follow up. I was reading some stuff about tibial plateau fractures and it did kinda suck to read that 12 months later most still were not up to full strength in the affected leg, though many were at 90% by then. I'll keep working it out using pain as a guide. I'm still working the shoulder even though PT said I didn't need to. Still only using 3lb for some exercises and that still hurts. I think I have a lot of beat up tissue in the shoulder though. I'm amazed that this far out it still feels bruised on my shoulder, tricep, side of my belly/hip, knee, calf, foot and I still have swelling from knee down (though not swelling nearly as bad as it once was). That asphalt is some hard stuff. If anyone else is thinking about crashing, I'd advise first not to do it and second to only crash where there is a mattress or pile of pillows.

Talked to a guy who's brother just hit a deer on a motorcycle. He broke 4 ribs and his collar bone. Beat him on the fracture count so score one for scooters. lol
Then, my mother ran into her cousin and brought my crash up. For years I've heard the story of how he almost died from hitting a deer on his motorcycle from multiple family members. Feels like the only story anyone knows about a motorcycle sometimes. Turns out, I broke more stuff than him too plus the contusion... but he had a bunch of stitches on his head from the deer antler catching him because he didn't wear a helmet. I usually just tell people I'm fine though, so I won't be any sort of family folklore. Plus it's a scooter, not a Harley.
People laugh half of the time I say I hit a deer on a scooter. I've started saying I hit a deer on a motorcycle and the reaction is different and always starts with concern instead of amusement. I hate to always sound like I've got a chip on my shoulder about scooters, but I don't get it.

Its almost Thanksgiving and I am thankful that you are still alive. Thank you for maintaining this forum. It would have been shitty deals for the forum community if you didn't survive the ordeal...and if the forum got shut down, all that information would be lost.
Once again, thank you for ALL that you do. The forum is a great place. The videos you make are super helpful. Your documentation and write-ups are wonderful. I learned a lot from this forum throughout the years, and the credit goes to you.
You are appreciated!

I learned a lot from this forum throughout the years, and the credit goes to you. I'm grateful for the kind words, but make no mistake; this forum is badass because of a lot of people. I've said it many times, but we have a great group and a lot of knowledge hanging around here and I appreciate that everyone keeps logging in and helping each other here. BTW, add one more to the laughs. One of my closest friends came over today. Friends since about 1st grade. I hadn't talked to him in 2 months other than a quick phone convo. Never told him about the crash. He came over and asked why I was using a cane. Told him I hit a deer on the scooter. He laughed. Said sorry, but it's just funny. Proceeded to tell me about cutting his calf (just a nick) on some rock while he was walking down a hill in FL last week and how it hurt.

The way you moderate this forum is top notch. I've been on Honda car forums and browsed other scoot/moped forums but I find this one to best in the sense of being welcoming, informative, a collection of great tuners, a sense of community. I am amazed to see the amount of people that continue to sign up as forum members. There is also the unknown lurkers, like I was for several years that didn't sign up, that use this forum as a technical resource.
Very very true that the Members make this a Great place! There are many badass tuners, machinists, gurus here. Ultimately, you are the one that brings it all together, you manage and moderate it very well, and in the end you pay the bill to keep this forum online...that is why you deserve Thanks.
