It really pisses me off when I hear "it's just a scooter" it doesn't matter if it's a Chinese scooter or a Harley, when you go down, the road doesn't care. I know someone here who died, because he was wearing a cheap Chinese half helmet, they said he would have walked away, if he had a decent full face real helmet. He got hit by a drunk driver

If you want to see stupid, look at Florida, people riding in crazy traffic with nothing but a pair or shorts, they must like pain

Then the riders don't even bother to strap them on sometimes. They are totally clueless and it's just a vacation toy that's so slow that you could never get hurt on it as far as they're concerned so the helmet is just an inconvenience. Some of them learn the hard way, but thankfully not a lot of them.

ive gone down so many times, always me being aggressive on a turn, never been seriously hurt........thank god but gotta stop leaning so hard some times lol, good thing about that is im already close to the ground haha. glad i wear a helmet really does save lives, ive gone down at 15 mph and afterwards thinking that was nothing looking at the damage done to my helmet makes you realize not wearing one a simple lay down could be deadly with out.

I just ordered a full face helmet after reading these. I'll admit I had the same thoughts 'its just a scooter' ' doesn't go fast enough to kill myself' now I'll look into some jacket at least, something to wear down here in HOT Florida. I would feel people are likely to make fun of someone fully geared up on a scooter. But I'm sure they never laid anything down before

It is scary.
I went down 3 times that i can recall. All 3 times had a full face helmet.
First, this county road years ago in the town i live now, just got done raining, and the road was a tar patch on top of black top, this guy acted like he was gonna roll the stop sign coming onto the road i was on, i instantly locked the brakes, scooter went sluding on its side, i was sliding on my ass with my legs and head in the air, was like slip and slide, i was close to pulling that guy out of his car. Luckily no road rash, no scrapes or injuries.
Second, was living in Lafayette, in. Lafayette roads are very busy. It was raining, left turn red arrow light just turned green, maybe 3-7mph, made the left, I went down with the scooter, roads in Lafayette are slick in rain from oil leaks of ppls vehicles. No injuries.
Third, was in Lafayette going to donate plasma, going about 20, yet again roads were wet, two lane one way, I was in the left lane, this douchebag in the right lane 1-oclock of me decides to cut me off, i locked my brakes and swerved to the left and went down on my palms and wrists, think i broke my wrist "still cant carry anything heavy in my left hand joint pops out", all traffic stopped, i fucking snapped screaming, don't you check you effing blind spots before changing lanes etc, i almost went off on that dood, he was sorry but still.
4th, almost same as 3rd scenario, this dumb bitch does same shit, changing lanes without checking blind spot "me", conrete was dry but was able to slow down before dumbass changed lanes, and scooter horn dont sound off like a car horn, pointless. I swear I wanted to install a damn freight train compressed air horn. Have them mandatory on scooters.
Im prob sure other possible accidents i avoided but cant recall.
Ppl are ignorant and dumb. Today i left the subdivision, some douchebag spilled rocks making a turn leaving the rocks in the road. You can see the path of rocks.
Well, who ever got hurt in this thread, hope all is ok now.

The point of a lethal head injury is 25mph. That means that 25mph or more, you can easily die if your head hits the road. I wear a full face helmet. Helmets have saved my life twice.
Half helmets are a joke, the same with bicycle helmets. All they are is a hardhat. If something falls from the sky you have protection, but in an accident they don't protect the side of your head or you face and that is where the impact will most likely occur.

Rear tire kicked out on some gravel (screw that tar and chip technology) and instinctively I stuck out my foot. It was automatic. Note to self: 30mph on a scooter is NOT 10mph on a mountain bike. It was over real quick and I think the smack to my foot as my boot rebounded off the blacktop as it grabbed was my only real issue. Can’t replace 45 years of bicycle muscle memory with one year of scootin experience.

I have fallen just walking and done enough damage to my face and head to know that a scoot or bicycle will be much worse. Personally I say BS on the 25mph fatality number, it is way too high. It all depends on how, where, and what you hit.
I have gone down twice on a scoot and it hurt even with protective gear. Both times were probably less than 5mph. I have gone down too many times to count on a bicycle without protective gear but that was just how we rode back in the 60's. It is a miracle any of us survived.

Today with temperatures in the 80's I rode the short distance to town in shorts, t shirt and sandals something I don't do as use my armoured gear, felt really vulnerable and drove no more than 25-30 for the 4 miles there and back.
