Been a while between posts yet again, but I'm back ha!
This isn't my scooter, but should be a good build anyway. A while back a mate of mine asked my opinion on what scooter I'd recommend playing with and if I'd be keen to build something for him. I recommended either a Jog, Dio or Piaggio Zip since there is a wide range of parts out there for them.
Next thing I know there is a good bit more money in my bank and he messaged saying find something and go from there. After a week of looking around I came across a 2002 Piaggio Zip for sale, fairly tidy, no reg and listed wrongly on a local auction site. Ended up winning the auction for what I feel was a good price and then went for a 7 hour round trip to pick it up.
Meet "Blue Thunder"
It's been off the road for about 8 years, still fired up first kick and ran fine!
Top speed was only 45k though, so figured I'd see what I could get out of it without spending much time or money to start with
First off I removed the restrictor from the CVT and gave it a general clean in there
That got it over 50k at least, but it started feeling like it was lean bogging over 3/4 throttle, so next came a swap from the 52mj to a 70 and also deleted the EGR
factory 17.5mm PHVA!
As well as a fresh air filter foam and removing the tiny snorkel from the inlet got it up over 65k and a lot more pull. I don't think a 20KP/H gain is bad for minimal outlay!

Seems that Polini is making out ok from you. I also prefer Polini, good stuff. Nice platform to build up, I’m sure the outcome will be fun.

These zips are very easy to upgrade, and Very light. Will make a great project.

Finally made a decent bit of progress today
Engine out: Learned that the exhaust HAS to come off if you want to pull the easy to get to engine mount bolt, otherwise the engine falls but stays hanging from the bike as the mount runs between the header and the engine ha!
As removed, ready for a bit of a clean before stripping down
Whipped the head off and something didn't seem right, took a sec to realize that the factory forgot to fit a head gasket!!
So fresh looking!
Ready for a final bit of cleaning and it'll be time to start porting the cases tomorrow night

Gave the cases a bit of a clean up, didn't grind too much out, just opened them up a bit and took out a few rough edges. *Pics are before I finished, so still a bit rough!
Froze the crank/baked the new "Polini Evolution" bearings (NTN with the same part numbers on them as the stock ones I removed lol)
Note the water pump mount for the higher spec Zip and Aprillia models
Decided to run the Polini Race small end bearing rather than the Athena, they are both "race" but the Polini looks heavier duty. Forgot to take pics yesterday, but I opened out the exhaust port, widened it by about 1.5mm and gave it a good polish up. Also cleaned up the intake ports while I was at it.
Got the head on and torqued up. Squish is tight at .65mm but it's within spec according to the booklet that came with the kit.
Just had to throw the pipe and carb on for some glamour pics!
