Something could have shifted the pickup, I would imagine. This could have been caused by a loose bolt, something bent, or something broken. I'm not 100% sure about this but perhaps the issue is with the CDI itself, since that's the unit that actually triggers the spark after receiving a signal from the pickup.

Take the intake off and pull the reedblock and look for chips, cracks, chunks missing, etc...

Don't worry about the starter fluid until you have checked the reeds as recommended above. If you hold the reed block up to a light source and you can see light anywhere through it then that would be a problem.
Starter fluid is only used as a substitute for fuel, such as if your carburettor or fuel system is not working properly. Checking the reed block isn't a check for fuel flow to the combustion chamber, it's a check that fuel that has already been injected is staying there. In other words, if your reed block is leaking then fuel, and subsequently combustion gases, are getting back to the intake system. That's another type of backfiring that I failed to mention in my previous explanation. Clearly, this type of backfiring can be more dangerous since hot gases are being exposed to incoming fuel.

Is it getting spark now? Is the plug sparking if you pull it out and turn it over?
Tried kickstarting it? Or are you using the electric start? Sounds silly but sometimes a quick sharp snap of the foot on the kickstarter will do it! We can kick em over much faster than the ele start will spin it...

Tried a new plug yet? Spark might not be very strong from a weak plug? Compression there? I dunno man, just thinking out loud at this point.... This scooter did run tho right? I mean, the way it is set-up as it sits?
