Which wire? Got a pic?
It could be the CDI isn't the right one. They have AC and DC CDI's. They are not interchangeable.

^^^^^^^ what Fox says. I've never seen a wire to the CVT. If there was one it would have to be engine-frame ground. But that's taken care of by the starter ground. Pix please.

Some have a wire going in there to a pickup of some sort (haven't seen one myself) that works as a speed sensor and hooks up as a rev limiter. Dunno if that's on any GY6s or not and I don't think it would kill spark, might just remove a limiter, if it's unhooked. :dunno:

Right! Cutting/disconnecting the old school rev limiter wire de-restricts the engine. It won't affect spark. I think the fact that we haven't heard from sincity is because he figured out what was wrong. People don't post the outcome sometimes. This is the old school rev limiter pickup. It worked off a magnet on the clutch bell.

Dave comes through once again! Really, really clean stuff there, Dave. Kind of a weird way to limit revs. :stumped:

I got those pics off a guy in the UK like 5 or 6 years ago. I have never actually seen one before. I think they did it that way so you didn't have to buy a new CDI or actually dig into the engine to remove a washer or whatever to make it faster. You just disconnect a wire and voila! I think maybe they realized that it's cheaper to use a washer or a CDI or a small main jet to serve the same purpose or, the UK authorities made them change the restriction method because it was too easy to bypass. Any 16 year old can snip a wire. They are really strict on the scooter laws over there. I here they don't just impound your scooter but they destroy it in a crusher if they catch you on an illegal scoot.

I had one on my scoot too, it must be a UK thing.
Don't know of any being crushed, but if they caught you without insurance they certainly could. I think it's because I live in a rural area (you guys know what my scoot's like) but I've never had any problems with them.

So they're still using that type of rev limiter over there? Interesting.

The UK is a place of wonder, I tell you. A wierd mix of the ultra modern and the shockingly ancient. There was this episode of Top Gear where a judge ordered a convicted drug dealer's Mitsubishi Evolution to be destroyed. The producers of the show "helped" the court destroy it by letting the British Army shoot it to bits. They have some creative ways to "crush" vehicles there, it seems!

Yes indeed! I'm a huge fan of TopGear too. That Vietnam episode was CLASSIC! I've seen it more than once. I'd post the link to it but I'm sure we'd both get kicked off here for hijacking the post!

I know I'm late to the party having just read this from SD, but just pointing out that a pickup on the clutch bell of a CVT setup would be a speed limiter, not rev limiter. Now those wiring diagrams that say "speed limiter" actually make sense to me.

Yeah "speed limiter" is technically the correct term for it.
