Gear up kit ordered as well. It may not go in right away because I’ll need to get the carb tuned and working 100% before I change anything else, but I’m excited because it seems like the last big jump in performance I’ll get. I was hoping to get another of the gears it gets pressed onto so I can go back and forth easily if I decide I hate it, but I can’t quite find the part in the schematics I’m looking at. I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

With the gear swap change be prepared to retune the weights in the variator . I found I had to go a notch lighter.

Malossi 19mm carb installed. It was a tough one. At first it got stuck and it turned out I may have mangled the slide a bit because there was a rough piece of metal that it was getting hung up on. I ended up filing it off and then the slide was smooth throughout the movement. I also took a long time to figure out that there wasn’t supposed to be a nut on the outside below the elbow. So the throttle cable was way too tight at first.
Then, I had to really play around with the airbox to get it in the right position. Eventually I got it all setup, but didn’t have time to do any jetting runs. My first and only ride was with my best guess of proper jetting. A 94 main and 45 pilot. It seems close, midrange is better then before but top end is a little slower. I can’t tell whether to go up or down. So I’ll go up first.
I don’t like the spring/neeedle. Getting that cap on is very hard! I need two more hands, but eventually, after struggling for about 30 minutes, I got it together. Fortunately, I left the needle in the middle and idle and midrange seems good. Its only main jet I need to focus on.

My bet is your rich and have room to go down to below 90 with stock air box .

My bet is your rich and have room to go down to below 90 with stock air box . I'm thinking so too, but just to be safe, I want to go up first. I'll think about it. If I could get a good test run with GPS, then I could try going down a bit. I started it this morning to do a little fuel mix tweak, but didn't have enough time to commit to do it right.

Do you have a way to check head temps? Having that info really helps with tuning.

I only idled and took it for about a 1/4mi run, but everything seemed within safe range. One I have a little more time to jet, I'll actually get to see where it goes with longer WOT runs.
I am hoping that the new carb keeps the temp down a bit more then the last one. That one would hit 350F on my typical uphill drive home, and always made me a bit nervous.

96 jet seems like the one. At least for the current relatively chilly temps.
My gear up kit also showed up, but waiting on a gasket. I may do some testing before installing it, because I'm noticing my rpm is only hitting 8600 and I should get max power around 9250, but not sure how to get there. I may have to see if I can get a contra spring that's a little bit below my 1500, but stronger then stock. Then I can lighten my rollers and see if it pops.

Red clutch springs installed. The couple takeoffs I tried seemed to be a touch higher RPM-wise. Seems like it may just be enough.
Next up is the gear up kit. Not sure where I’m going to get help pressing the gears.

Not sure where I’m going to get help pressing the gears. Most auto shops would take the job. Its super simple and will take all of like 10 or 15 mins of their time.

machine shops small engine and auoto shops have presses You will need lighter weights with the gear upkit to get the same shift points .

Hmm. Hearing an odd ticking that sounds like piston slap. I got real close and it seems to be coming from the CVT, but I don’t see exactly where.
I also noticed my belt is down to 17mm. Its not below spec for replacement, but 1mm probably would make a difference in performance.
I’m waiting on gear oil to show up before doing the gear up kit, but mustering up the courage.
The biggest issue I’m having now is when hitting the throttle, I have a slight lag in power before it really opens up. Not sure if its just the cvt moving through travel, or maybe the needle setting on the carb. I’m hoping to get it figured out on Tuesday when its a little warmer. My carb is close to dialed in when its 60F out, but the weather is going to change and I will likely have to revisit it in a month.
I’m also planning on hondabonding in my intake to rule out a possible source of air leak. I was able to reproduce the hanging idle on the stand by going 1/2 throttle over and over and then letting it drop. So something is going on. There is nothing visible on the block, and spraying around with carb cleaner doesn’t reveal any obvious leaks.

To track down the noises source you can take a screw driver put the metal end starting at the cylinder and work your way back and your ear next to the plastic end .
