Hello everyone my name is Jay and I'm from the Detroit area. Little bit about me, I have 15 years experience as an auto mechanic and currently 10 years as a licensed heating and air conditioning contractor so I definitely have the tools and skills to work on scooters. I'm in my late forties and I can't believe I'm just now discovering how much fun it is to ride and work on scooters. It started about 6 weeks ago when my neighbor asked if I could look at this scooter he just purchased to see if I could get it running and roadworthy. That poor scooter looked like it had been driven to hell and back twice and supposedly it's a 2018 Tao Tao. So ultimately I had volunteered to put myself in a position to resurrect the Dead. But after putting a lot of Blood Sweat and Tears into it and had the thing running and driving then all it took was a couple of road tests on my part and taking my daughter for a ride and now we have the scooter bug. I have quickly found out that scooter riding is one of the best things you can do as a family to stay bonded together. So I just want to check in and say hi and to all of the people that have posted on YouTube and the 49ccscoot videos and forums thank you very much those have been unbelievable help with my new journey into working on scooters and I can't wait for more.

Welcome to the forum. I didn't discover how much fun scooters could be till my late 30's. Always had motorcycles, but always dismissed scooters as irrelevant. Till I brought one for my wife! 😆 Been hooked ever since.

They are addictive. I didn't start until I was 60 and learned everything I know from 49ccScoot. As you venture down the road of getting one for yourself read through the threads on the model you are getting. They are not all created equal.

Where in the Detroit area are you? I'm from Ann Arbor and I like to take long rides haha. I may be out in Detroit tonight riding with a large group of guys. Great scooter scene in the area! Mostly Honda AF16 guys, but I'm more into Minarellis.

With your natural skills Buy a 2 stroke with your mechanical skills you could build nice upgraded scoot. You can add 5-15 mph with just a some time and a few hundred bucks . The first 5 or so can come from just tuning and derestricting the stock scoot. The minarelli platform is used on a ton of scoots and has a ton of performance parts. The Af 16 -18 plat form is used on less scoots and also is easy to make fast . Post up what your looking at and what you plan on building and we will help you out

I actually live in Warren. The scooters I've been working on are the GY6 TaoTao 49cc models. After I got my neighbor's 49cc TaoTao running for him I gave it back to him about a week ago and keep in mind it is a complete pile lol that's the one I had to resurrect from the dead it's not the prettiest looking machine it's been through some hell but it does have upgrades that we're already installed when he bought the bike from his friend . it has the keihn carburetor which I believe is aftermarket correct? The air box has been removed and he has the small pod style air filter, he has an aftermarket variator with 6.5 G rollers and as far as the clutch goes he has a yellow Contra spring and the blue clutch pad Springs I'm not sure if a Big Bore Kit was put on I didn't go down into the cylinder but for being a TaoTao 49cc it's definitely faster than stock because my other neighbor has a stock TaoTao 49cc that I've worked on and it's nowhere near as fast being stock. So he gave me the scooter back two nights ago because he basically destroyed everything I did to it he crashed it busted up the tail light broke the turn signal switch broke the brake light switch tore up the brand new mirrors I put on and shredded the brand new belt I put on. With the aftermarket variator and clutch springs I'm wondering if I should have installed the Kevlar belt instead of just the basic stock style belt. So far with parts and paying me for labor he has about $500 into the scooter and he wants to put more money in with a new tire and fix everything that he trashed and I tried telling him he could just buy a new scooter and be done with it. Maybe you guys have some input I have a couple questions. For me and my daughter I'm thinking about just going with TaoTao scooters based on the price and of course mine will have the Big Bore Kit and all the upgrades to go faster LOL.
Is the minerelli similar to the GY6 platform?
And do you guys have any experience with the Kevlar belts? With the aftermarket variator and clutch I probably should have put Kevlar on a correct?
Sorry for the long post.

Sorry for the long post. If you want to go fast to any meaningful degree and have the most fun and at the lowest cost, I strongly suggest getting a two stroke. You'll spend half the money for twice the speed, quite literally. The Minarelli is a two stroke engine and the 139QMB/GY6 is a 4 stroke. Very different. Most Chinese scooters you find will be 4 stroke 139QMB engines, with a few exceptions. Yamaha Zumas and Jogs have Minarelli engines, but slightly different versions. Certain Honda Elites have the Honda equivalent (sorta), the AF16. You can also find Chinese and Taiwanese scooters with these style motors, but are a little more rare. Kevlar belts are good. I would say switching to kevlar may be more crucial once you get a BBK, but never a bad option I suppose. We actually ride out of Warren and into Detroit. On FB, check out the "Detroit Scooter Tuning Scene" group. Lots of good guys. Some decent bikes for sale in the area right now too...

I will definitely check that group out. Thank you. So the GY6 basically refers to the engine Style ? Or is it more of the overall class of scooters 50cc 125cc Etc ? Because those different sizes are all referred to as GY6 from what I understand.

thinking about just going with TaoTao scooters based on the price and of course mine will have the Big Bore Kit and all the upgrades to go faster Or . . for better reliability and less aggravation, select a 150cc and leave it stock! The 50cc and 150cc Icebear Vision are about the same price . . review.

There is a description of GY6 engine codes here somewhere. It evades me at the moment.

GY6 4 stroke style engine various cc 49 125 150 for example . Minarelli available in the states 2 stroke mainly 49 cc but there are versions on polaris atvs that are 90 cc. Like Kenho says and Tortoise 4 strokes are expensive to fix so buy as big or bigger than you need . 2 strokes are for modding up if you like to keep making them faster . here are some examples 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/11206/scoot-speed-list

What would you say Zino , a 2T isn't really double the power of a similar cc 4T but it is twice the fun. I would say a stock 2T is probably 1.5 times the HP of a similar cc stock 4T? Would that be anywhere close? With a few mods a 2T might even be 1.7x?
That scoot looks to be a complete wreck. After a second wreck it is probably suitable only for a few spare parts. Time to write it off.

The trade off is less gas mpg by about 1/3 But you make up with it with 150 % more power and you are correct you can build beyond that . Stock 2 strokes they actually hold them back to keep them under 40 mph Stock 4 strokes have to go all out to get past 40 mph without restrictions

Yeah I feel the same way about the scooter that's what I've been telling him. I'm doing some other work for him I'm going to just tell him to give me the scooter and I'm going to keep it for parts. Unless he insist on continuing to throw money at me. So you figure a two stroke you lose gas mileage by 1/3 but you make it up within 150% more power. And you can continue to build it up from there.
