Aarghh. So close but so far. Well, the new stator and flywheel are basically trash if I don't use them, so that'll be money down the tubes plus money for a new stator. I think I've got a small chance with the taper switch and that's good enough for me. If it works, I'll chalk it up to luck and never ask god for anything again. Back in a bit.

vacationer I admire your determination. Alieexpress has this www.aliexpress.com/i/32912442964.html Maybe the Racingplanet one will work with the old fly wheel. How are the magnets on the old one? You test them to see if the will hold a 19mm combination wrench hanging from them.

sorry , but I thought you said the new stator and flywheel were both new and matched to each other. but , I guess that's not the case.if this thing comes apart at speed it can create shrapnel - literally up your butt .
I used to work for a GC and it must have been some kind of inside joke from the past;but if somebody was looking for a tool or something he'd always say " if it was up your ass you'd know where it was ".

jloi what a great expression, and accurate too. But no, you were right. Stator matches flywheel. Those are working fine together. Problem is, the flywheel's taper doesn't match the taper on the end of the crankshaft, which apparently explains why my DIY keys keep getting shredded. pinkscoot feels like you want me to give up! Anyways, old one's not looking so hot now that I've got three out of four rivets drilled to all hell. Sun went down before I could finish. I have a good feeling about tomorrow, and if I can somehow swing this stupid mod, everyone gets a Klondike.

So I have good news and bad news. Bad news is, my cat was hit by a car this morning and died. Good news is, it looks like the flywheel procedure was a success! God giveth and God taketh away. The scoot will be named after her. Top flywheel is the new magneto with the old center piece. Fits like a glove. So I have the option now to orient the slot in the center hole as needed in relation to the reluctor, meaning I can easily set my spark timing. I'm also considering doing what Brent did in his video and making multiple holes for the bolts. That way I'll have the ability to adjust the timing in the future. AS far as the bolts themselves, I'm obviously going to beed either lock nuts or lock washers. If someone wants to recommend either one over the other, or perhaps something different altogether, I'd appreciate it. I suppose I need to make sure the the bolts don't conflict with the stator on the inside of the flywheel. Perhaps some panheads with the heads on the inside, nuts on the outside.

What ever you decide. I would use some type of thread locker too.
Poor Roxy.

Thanks for the words, guys. Trying to focus on the scooter to distract myself, but something feels off without Roxy to distract me from the scooter... 190mech yeah what was done there is basically what I'm doing. Gonna dial in the timing and then do my best to lock the center piece in place to prepare for those higher RPMs. Cooling fan actually has dedicated holes on the flywheel further out from the center piece. No conflict

Update on the magneto story:
Woodruff key came today. Plugged her in and cranked it. No-go. Then I noticed that my stator and magneto weren't lined up due to the fact that the crank was dictating the position of the magneto while the engine case was dictating the position of the stator, which is about 0.1" too deep. Gonna glue some washers to the back of the stator to line things up.
PS, is the engine case not conductive? Just realized today that the metal of the stator is in contact with the engine...

I hear you. Also noticed my stator is crooked by ~3* (coils on one side are leaning a little forward) and that my new key almost got sheared. Just a few scratches. Now that I know about both the depth and the angle of the stator being wrong, it's no wonder... Hold on a little longer, fellas!
