What is your compression? Not in possession of a tester but will acquire tomorrow if necessary

Ok no dice on the battery it's wired up right. However I did remove the stator, and then starter motor when I tore everything off initially. I know if you disassemble the starter body and rotate it you can change the direction but I did not take it apart. I will check compression tomorrow. I can't see why I'd lose compression with a new piston and cylinder though š¤ thanks for the help thus far

Just to add when I turn the crank by hand in the other direction I encounter the same resistance, a turn and half or so smoothly, then I hit the snag and I have to put two hands on the fan to complete the rotation

Just read this:
"no 4 stroke engine is made to turn backwards, a 2 stroke on the other hand if it uses reed valve induction can be started and ran backwards if the ign timing is reversed."

Don't,t know about the ign timing normally not a problem, but the piston can be fitted wrongly it should have an arrow stamped on the crown this has to point towards the exhaust not "up" as I once thought Geoff

Let us know how you get on.

I wonder how poorly it runs with the arrow the wrong way?

Compression tested very low I'll report back but I know it's low. I'm going back out now and will attempt to kickstart now that I know the center stand must be down. I'm starting to suspect that because I forgot to remove the block that was holding the front half of the bike up after I removed the engine that that is placing an extra load on the engine which is making it difficult to turn over Many thanks

Compression is at 30psi barely

Wow that's really low. Something very wrong there.

But why does it crank fine now and not with the spark plug in?

I still can't figure out why the flywheel is turning backwards. What's to happen when I get it running,I'll be riding it in reverse everywhere? This is the first two stroke I've worked on and I'm becoming very irritated.
Many thanks for your involvement in helping

It should not be cranking backwards. Something is very wrong. Either the positive from the battery is to the frame and negative to the red/fused/positive wire or the starter is hooked up backwards which is kinda unlikely but also possible although I think it would ground through the case and make a hot mess.

I'll investigate this a bit more. Thx!

Two strokes can run in reverse. He careful. š
