Hey friends,
I'm helping a dude work on an 05 Zuma and it has a bog, mostly when not on the stand, but also sometimes on the stand and sometimes not.
So far, I've cleaned (and swapped because the old one was so dirty) the carb, changed the fuel filter, checked spark, fuel supply, and I think that's about it.
I took it for one ride down the road, it got up to about 30mph on the speedo and fell on its face and died. Then it would start and idle fine, and even rev on the stand sometimes, but sometimes not. Guy says it's done this since last season.
Just really inconsistent...what else should I be checking?
I'm thinking petcock, reed valve, recheck/re-clean the carb and not sure what else.
Little help?

Pro bono work can hurt somtimes :)a least it,s running sounds like a bit of debris is kicking in and out, here,s my list, fuel cap filter, petcock filter, carb needle valve seat, carb float sticking, blocked jets, reeds and another carb clean :)PIA but you can only check them off the list,I would add accelerator cable adjustment but that's my own bit of greif .the solution is out there. Geoff Thanks Geoff! Definitely adding to my checklist as well. Good luck with your throttle cable. I’ve spent more time with them than I care to share. Haha

Airbox or pod filter, filter clean and intact? The tank has a filter inside so you don’t need an additional one. Is it jetted correctly? Do you have known good ignition parts to swap out (plug,CDI, cap, wire, coil)

Vacuum petcock? Have had those go bad and cause all kinds of weird running issues. Easy to check for fuel in the vacuum line.

Second time messing with the bike yesterday... I’m going to choose my future “helping hand” projects more carefully. Screw this thing. Definitely not worth my time.
Anyway, I’m thinking along the lines of ignition issue now, like Ryan mentioned toward the end of his last comment.
Fuel supply is good, carb is good, compression feels good, reeds were a little out of whack, but fixed now. Still has a bog in low RPM, but cleans up at higher RPM.
It’s definitely healthier, but has a ways to go. I looked at the flywheel and pickup and they were both rusted all to hell. Cleaned them up and it seemed to help things out quite a bit, but still has a bog and not running correctly.
I’m thinking a coil and CDI may be next, if I decide to try again. Other than that, I can’t think of what could be going on here. Frustrating.
It’s one thing when it’s at my place and I can mess around when I feel like it, but showing up to someone dude’s house and fixing stuff while he drinks beer and won’t shut up about women on dating apps, it gets old quick.

This once happened to my keeway hurricane, took it to a shop and they charged me for a new exhaust pipe, they said the problem was air in the exhaust pipe, try making sure there’s no gaps from the engine to the exhaust pipe sometimes it can mess with the cylinders 👍🏻

Good flow and a dry vacuum line. Damn of course it couldn't be something as simple as that. I don't know if a loose or under-torqued flywheel nut could cause a low end bog, just throwing it out there. Hope this guy appreciates what you're doing for him, diagnostics can be a royal PITA sometimes.

I read through this and I may have missed it. Usually a bog in the low RPM is Pilot jet/ AF adjustment issues. Do you get it when it's cold and running on the enricher?

I’ve messed with the idle screw, but unfortunately it has the stock carb and you cannot adjust the A/F screw. I don’t like these carbs.

You may never get rid of it then. Your "friend" needs to invest in a decent carb. Treatland has a sale going on.

It’s a Mikuni carb? I was just working in one the other day that was doing the same thing. Turns out the little washer that goes under the main jet wasn’t there. Washer added, problem solved. At least I hope that’s what it is.

At least I hope that’s what it is. I think they’re just a proprietary carb that Yamaha uses, but I really am not sure who manufactures them. They suck though. Washer that goes under the main jet? I’m not familiar with that washer. I have a spare I could steal a washer from most likely.
