Hello,
my name is Def and im new here. im from Southeastern PA area. i found this forum from watching 49ccscoot videos on youtube and the china scoot mod series.
i decided to go that route also and bought myself a china scooter off of amazon to try my hand at it, since i like to tinker also. i just received it yesterday and so far, im enjoying it. its a 50cc so its not fast, but good enough to get around on. im just waiting on a breakdown so i can tear into it lol.
question to any PA users, when i went to register my motor scooter, they did the whole thing with the MSO/MCO and bill of sale since it was brand new in a crate, but they registered it as a moped (MP) instead of a motorcycle/motor-driven cycle (MC). is this correct? im not sure since im reading conflicting info on the definitions of a Motor scooter and moped and im confused to why the the two different auto tag places i went to referred to it as a moped(MP) and not a motorscooter(MC)? is it the 49CC displacement that defines it as such?
thank you for having me here!

Welcome!
PA likely classifies everything 49cc and under as a moped. The moped designation is defined by power output, not body style. There’s a few states that do the same (at least one doesn’t even issue a title to the little bikes).
With drop-ship China scooters, the best advice is to do a thorough PDI (Post Delivery Inspection). There’s a few lists online you can follow. Quality control doesn’t seem to be a top priority with the the domestic manufacturers there.
If you haven’t already, I’d go ahead and change the oil in the engine and the gears. Dino-based is good for now.
At 600 miles, your bike needs its first service. That’s an oil change, new spark plug, and valve adjustment. There’s good guides in the Tech Section here on the site. *This is where you’ll change to fully synthetic oil.
After that, change your oil every 1000-1200 miles. You’ll adjust the valves too. Neither takes a lot of time. But you’ll want a good set feeler gauges, and a tappet tool.
But mostly, ride the hell out of it! Machines like to be used and taken care of. Abused or neglected machines cause way more issues. Wear it out!

Welcome! The tuning and tinkering never gets old. Warning though it's not a hobby, it's an obsession. 🤣 Seriously though your gonna have a blast.
Lotta really fantastic people around here that can help point you in the right directions.

thanks for the welcomes and the info guys! ill have to change the engine oil and gear oil. ive only put about 13kms on it so far, so not even broken in i come from the goped/motorized bike world, so i have a bit of foundation, but there is a lot i am unfamiliar with like the CVT and the ignition systems. im finding a whole lot of info and technical info on here and its awesome. im looking forward to all the riding and modding that will be done.

Yeah when I went to register mine they asked me (even though I had a signed md title) what the displacement was. I had zero clue. I said 49.7? Knowing about the 50cc pa rule regarding MC license. They said “that rounds to 50. Being a noob I didn’t argue and Runkles cranked out a mc tag and sent me on my way. I think I should have stood my ground and said 49-period but I just wasn’t sure about any of it. So now my factory 49.?cc bike has a MC tag and I should probably (anyway) have a MC license but I think they would depend on who and when I get pulled over by.

They don’t get to make stuff up on the fly. It’s literally part of the state’s vehicle code.

If I would have left off the .7 and just said 49 it would be different. Personally I think it’s stupid. I could have taken a Hyabusa in there and said it was 49cc.

Fun times at the DMV. Don't know how it goes in PA, but, down here, if they can fog a mirror (though I think there's a waiver if they can't), they hire'em and stick'em at the desk.

that is interesting. ive registered an out of state motorcycle before, but ive never done a scooter/moped with an MSO before so i wasnt so sure what to expect. the MSO said 49cc on it, so i guess thats how i got the moped plate. and it was 2 separate titling locations that referred to it as a moped, so im not gonna argue with them about it they also asked me if it was for "on-road use" and i said yes. they said it wasnt since it cant go on highways, which i was confused about also. dealing with the DMV is fun
