So I called in at the dealership today and collected 5l of 10 40 semi synthetic oil as per the helpful technician who was summond to assist me,he confirmed that the capacity is really 800ml when left to drain fully,so I decided against the engine flush and I have refilled with 750ml there is no separate filter on this engine just a metal screen.

Deep joy did the commute today checked the oil it,s clear I was expecting a series of oil changes to clean this up.I have kept the contaminated oil standing in the garage and its showing no sign of separating out just yet. Geoff

I wonder if it is your short commutes that causes condensation within the crankcase without enough time for the water to boil off during longer rides..Perhaps more frequent changes to rid the engine of that corrosion causing slurry?

I will bear that in mind but this change happened suddenly over 7 days,I check the oil every week and it,s always looked like new up to this event.

Pondering 190mech thoughts I went hunting and found this little gem in the sym jet owners manual. currently I have done nothing to avoid emulsification, I just get on ride and park, easy enough to avoid and avoid and a good reason to go cruising and hit that 10k instruction, the instruction lose a little in translation Geoff

It's telling you it's warmer in the car! I have seen a lot of bikes only used for short runs get a white look to the oil sight glass.

I have decided to go it alone on the service of the scoot, with no help on utube or the web in general I determined that the left hand panel had to be removed to access the air filter,it was quite easy 4 self tappers and a push towards the rear and the panel is released allowing access to the filter I I think the air filter is a sym OE 17211-XGA-00 I cannot find one under £20 on the net I will call at the dealer to check if they have one.

That side car might cramp my style and spoil the side view of my parka. After trolling the web pointlessly looking for a cheap air filter I bit the bullet and ordered OE,placed on Tuesday delivered today £18.49 including shipping just a tad annoying ,I pass the dispatch office at least once a week but they have no collection option. It must be a filter used in something else. Probably someone like high flow filters would make one. Post a picture up when you get it.

SThere's a picture of the filter a few posts up,popped it in today and changed the spark plug, easy enough but if you drop the plug inside the cowling it,s fiddiley to get out so thats the 3000 mile service done, this is the access panel for removing the plug
