My Christmas vacation starts monday so it's time to start my winter project! This time on the old KZ. I have on order: New fork seals and progressive springs. Going to powder coat the lowers black. Progressive shocks on order. Additionally i plan a new paint design. I have most of a set of tins from my parts bike that i'm prepping now. I'll just set the black tins aside and either keep them or sell them. The new color plan. I'll add some striping to that. This is a quick mockup of what i have in mind for striping. Once that is well underway, I'll start on wheels. Gong to pull the wire wheels off my donor bike. Have the hubs powder coated black and lace up black hoops. Chrome laces. Should look hot! Gonna go slow with the glaze. Nice thin layers. Still need a left side cover. Could only find them as a set on ebay so they are on the way.

I don't envy you for having to do all that body and paint work, but it sounds like it'll be slick when it's done.

So i have 23 days to get it done. If i just hit it an hour or two at a time i should be in good shape with-ought getting too sick of it. The trick will be getting everything ready for paint and then praying for a day warm enough to spray outside. Momma don't allow no painting in the house. ;D

The forks are broken apart and off to the powder-coater. I've added a few things to the shopping list: Got a modern master cylinder and break upgrades on order. The pipe is off with the tail painted and some cool "carbon fiber" wrap ready to apply. On the body parts i'm still sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling...

Pipe wrapping day... Rigged up a fancy holder. Started with the inside pipes ending below the bottom turn. Then on the first outside pipe i continued after the bend to wrap all 4 together. With the last outside pipe i did the same and wrapped the 4 together. Many use wire to fix the ends in place but i went with stainless pipe clamps because i like the industrial look.

Looks good Tim. You can get stainless steel zip ties too. Those are pretty cool.

I actually started with them but the wrap had a tendency to unravel and i didn't think they would cover enough. I'm definitely adding them to my bike tool kit tho.

great job but did you spray that exhaust wrap? your pipe will rust through eventually if you dont, even if you dont ride in the rain. i think vht makes some that you can find in just about any auto parts store.

Hey thanks for the heads up. I hadn't planned to because i like the raw look, but will hit it with the clear.
Plan changes:
With the black shocks, black powder coated fork lowers, black fork boots and gnarly wrapped pipes, i almost HAVE TO leave the KZ her pristine "Joan Jett" black...
I love the blue paint but not my underlying body work and the color just doesn't feel right with the bike that is developing. So at most i'm thinking of adding a white stripe. (yet another music reference...) ;D
Hopefully we'll have all back together and running this week...

Progress! New master cylinder on, forks, shocks and pipe. I'm kind of crazy about this bike all over again, and it's not even done. Got so excited i ordered some Pirellis to complete the package and get ready for the track day, my vintage club is doing in May.
