The Dr. Pulley variator arrived today!!! This one sure looks like it was produced with a lot more care than the factory original. I think I like that this one uses what appears to be an oil impregnated bronze bushing and a precision ground and hard chrome plated collar for the sliding half of the pulley rather than a bare steel collar, bronze bushing, grease and rubber seals of the OEM setup. My need for instant gratification is making me crazy. I have this part but the new belt and nut will not be here until Monday. Oh well, supposed to be cold and crappy out until the middle of next week anyway.

I’m running one on my Zuma 125 & I like it. Picked up a few mph & seemed to accelerate a little quicker too. Glad to have a thumbs up on my choice of replacement parts. Cleaned up the splines on the end of the crank where they got buggered up from things flopping around. They really did a number on it. There was a small section where all the splines were peened over a bit, looks like the hammer was the kick start cog. Just a couple rubs with a triangle file got them straightened out. There is still an ugly area but now everything will slide together and it looks like there is enough left so that the outside pulley and the kick start cog will still hang on tight when it is torqued properly. I’m a bit concerned about what the previous “mechanic” was doing in there. A couple of CVT cover screws were missing (sign of previous intervention by someone of questionable knowledge and/or experience). Also, there was a rag stuffed in the air outlet of the CVT case. The rag was oil soaked along with oil streaks on rear wheel from it flinging oil. With the odd design of having the oil level sight glass built into the CVT cover and the surprise gush of oil one would get by removing the cover without first draining the oil, I’m hoping they just made that mistake/mess and didn’t properly clean up after themselves. I’ll probably just change the oil in the final drive while I’m tinkering in the area.

The first time I changed the oil on my Vino, I didn’t get the o-ring seal for the sight glass set right, and it kept leaking.
I did learn that I could tilt the bike at an angle to keep the oil from pouring out when you talk the CVT cover off.

Thanks for the heads up on the o-ring. I will be sure to confirm it’s condition (and presence). Tracking shows delivery of the new nut and belt on Monday. Hoping to be tearing up the streets by Monday night!🛵

I got two nuts in the mail today!!!
….and a new belt.
I excitedly put them on, torqued to spec, reinstalled the CVT covers and filled it up with fresh oil. This thing is a hoot!!! I love it!
Still running the straight pipe, I rode it around a couple blocks then ran over to a friends house so he could take it for a quick rip. Then, I figured that I had better not push my luck with the straight pipe and went back home and installed a muffler. Then I ran it out of town so I could open it up. The road by my house that leaves town is a bit of an incline and I was bucking 30mph headwinds so I could only make about 42mph. Coming back, downhill and wind to my back, I hit 57! (Speedo reading, not gps)

I’m pretty sure the the o-ring at the sight glass has outlived its useful life. I have ordered a new one along with a few other general maintenance bits and pieces to bring things back to spec. In other news, through GPS, I have confirmed that the speedometer is accurate.

I love a good 125. I’ve had 2 Zuma 70’s (top end sport build) & my Zuma 125 did everything they did but a little better bone stock. Now with the 158, sleeper pipe, & a variator it would crush the 70’s, is fuel injected, & does way better on gas.

Just a couple short days riding this and I’m pretty much sold on higher displacement scooters. We will see if I can get the wife sold on it too. Higher displacement means the need for a motorcycle endorsement and that may be a battle to get her to do that.

About 250 miles on it in the past week…really enjoying this scoot!
Question for the experts. Cold start, pops right off. Automatic fuel enrichener does its job and after 30 seconds or so it settles down to a nice idle. But, after a couple minutes of run time, it goes back to a faster idle and never goes back down until it’s cool again.
I got this with no exhaust and am running it now with an aftermarket GY6 muffler. The OEM muffler has some stuff built into it as part of a complicated emissions system, the rest of that system is still hooked up. Suppose if I deleted the remainder of that system and properly capped off any abandoned vacuum lines that the high idle thing might be deleted along with it?

More than likely. Might need to adjust the fuel screw too. They come lean from the factory.

Received a big box from the Yamaha parts house yesterday but, alas, many parts on backorder. The part which I was really needing (I think) is the o-ring for the oil level sight glass. The grey ghost continues to leave a nice little puddle of oil everywhere she is parked.
In other news, I have rebuilt the exhaust header using mild steel pipe rather than the conduit I had originally used. The conduit-to-other-parts connections had to be rewelded several times and I have concluded that the material was not suitable for the task. While I was working in the area, I also made a more proper mount to hang the muffler to further alleviate future issues.
Late breaking news… more boxes have arrived, delivered by a rainbow of delivery truck colors bringing replacements for broken and missing body panels! Installation will commence today.

Today, after fulfilling all of my Mother’s Day obligations (I hope I got the obligations fulfilled) as a husband to the mother of my two children, I did a bunch of work on the Vino.
My box of Yamaha parts did not include the sight glass o-ring but I’m getting weary of this thing leaving behind puddles of oil everywhere it gets parked so I made one. I hope it does the trick… riding it to work and other running around tomorrow will be the test.
Other maintenance and restoration tasks completed were: *New CVT cover gasket (it was missing) *Oil change (replace the drain plug before adding new oil) *Restoration of badly faded plastic components; CVT outer cover, air box, inside of under-seat trunk. *Replace trunk latch *Replace broken plastic body component under front of seat *Install missing lower side panels *Finish deleting emissions system that was started by previous owner and fixed a bunch of their half a$$ “work”.
I’m excited about taking it out for a rip first thing in the morning after I get the wife and daughter off to school (daughter goes to school, wife works at school).

Just got back from a 10 mile rip around, and out of town.
The high idle once warmed up condition was not completely alleviated by completing the emissions delete as was hoped but it did greatly improve the situation. It went from very annoying to only slightly annoying.
My home-made sight glass o-ring was also not a complete success but it was an an improvement. It has gone from leaving puddles to leaving drips.
The other work done last night were completely successful. No panels blew off and not once did the seat fly open during the ride.
