The string is a clever idea. I pushed a pin into the piston up to the groove then held it with my finger while jamming the clip into the groove. Same thing on the other side. Then rotated the clip to be sure it was trapped in the groove.
Thanks

There is definitely a knack to getting the circlips in. Once you've done a few it's not so bad. A good pair of pliers really help.

Didn't help that I coated the piston with oil before trying to insert the circlip. :-)

The removable chain guide can go in either up or down. One side has no paint so I assume that side rubs against the chain. I'm guessing. Any suggestions? Does it matter which way I choose to put it? TIA, kevin

The upper photo show the guide with the missing paint. I remove it and turn it over then replace it. The it shows an all-black guide.

At last something seems to be going right. I got the chain tensioner in. While it was still slightly loose I used an old feeler gauge. I jammed it back and forth into the gap hoping to trigger the spring to release. Whether it did or not I can't tell. The reasons for removing the engine are growing: I couldn't tighten the three bolts beyond finger strength.

The rocker arm assemblies of an X on two corners diagonal. YES, I forgot to get a photo while it was still attached. An X on two corners and B on the third and am M on the fourth corner. There's a joke here somewhere about BM but you'd have to be in your 70's to get it. So how do I put the assembly back in? I realize I've got a 50/50 chanae of getting it right. More help please, TIA kevin

I found an old drill just big enough to tap the bent tube into it. Them pulled it off by hand. That's as straight as I can get.

The four metal tubes are dowel pins. Two locate into the cylinder to the block. And two locate into the cam assembly to cylinder. It will only line up one way.
