After an hour of fruitlessly sorting tools I remembered the table has two drawers. I opened one and found the tool I'd been looking for all day. I tried taking photos.

All I got done today was taking the muffler off. And that was a...XZVBC! No room to work. On he right side I could see the nut going to the muffler. I couldn't see its partner on the left side but I could feel it with my finger tips. Eventually I got the right-side nut out. But the hidden left produced a nut and threaded rod. Maybe the photo will show it,

I think the next step is taking off the carb. Do these 50cc motors have a manifold?

Yes they have a manifold to connect the carb to the engine. You can remove the carb without taking the manifold off.

Thanks. I'm planning on a big bore kit. Eventually the cylinder head has to come off. When does the manifold come off?

When you change the cylinder you will need to remove the manifold.

If I have the time tomorrow I'll pull all tubes and wires and try to label them so I can put them back when the job's done.

It's always good to take plenty of pictures and label stuff, just in case. If you don't have to unplug what looks like the CDI. I would just move it out of the way of possible. A lot of electronic stuff is better left alone if at all possible.

Thanks again. I wondered if it was a CDI. In the past I restored old VW Beetles. I put one in the distributor because it replaced points and condenser. It worked great but died eventually leaving me stranded 50 miles from home. I replaced it but at the same time put a spare in the glovebox but also spare points and condensers. Eventually found minor voltage problems could kill a CDI but it was so much nicer not needing to set point gaps anymore. There's plenty of room to move it out of my way without damaging it. First step is unplugging the battery positive terminal. I learned that lesson with the VW CDI.

Does the CDI have a different name in wiring diagrams? I found the regulator/rectifier but that has four wire; Red, Green Yellow and White.

The regulator/rectifier usually has some sort of fins on it. It gets hot and needs to have a large area to help get rid of the heat. It's usually somewhere where it can get air moving over it.
