Installed the new stage 6 clutch bell this weekend and switched from the red/heavy torque spring to a Malossi white torque spring. I also moved down from a 92 main jet (I mentioned 95 above, but it was a 92) to an 85. These changes seemed to make the bike run much better. Clutch engagement is around 6k rpm but I might turn this down to 5-5.5k or so. It pulls all the way up to around top speed at around 9300rpm and then kicks up to about 10,300rpm at top speed. Going downhill yields a bit higher speed and around 10,500-10,600rpm. Again, running the stock crank so I'm being careful not to exceed 10,500 or so but I think with slightly lighter rollers, it would be run better. I forget which rollers I have in it now but I know it was 3 7g's and then 3 of something else. That will be my next thing I try. Temperatures seemed incredibly mild, with the highest being around 262ºf... this makes me wonder if i need to step down closer to an 80 main jet but the bike runs well. I wonder if the gauge is reading lower than others? All of the above yielded a top speed of 50mph but there is definitely more tuning to do. For now, I'm happy because the bike runs all-around well.

Putting this here mainly as a point-in-time tuning log for myself as I tune the transmission of this thing. Since switching to the malossi white torque spring, it really seemed to make the bike run better and shift to a higher gear as speed increased as opposed to the red spring. Checking belt travel on the front drive faces yields some progress to be made in tuning. I am running the standard shim right now in the front that came with the over range kit, so removing it entirely or replacing it with a very thin one may help. Before this though, I'm going to lighten the rollers because the bike takes off and sits around 9,300 RPM when getting up to speed. Current roller setup is a total of 36g, or 6g each. Going to bump down to 5.5g and see how it goes. I'm suspecting I'll lose some top end with this change so then I might play with the shimming. Pics of the pulleys and wear... The stage 6 variator and pulleys do NOT give a great read with the sharpie test, especially the rear. The material is ceramic and almost porous so it doesn't wear all that well but based on these pictures it looks like there is certainly more to tune out of this. Makes me feel good that wear (or lack of) on the front, corresponds with the back.

dropped the weights in the vario down to 5.5g for a total of 33g. i also removed the variator shim next to the boss that stage 6 includes with the kit. didn't see nearly as much of a change by removing this (same top speed) as i thought i would. it removed a whole .6mm. perhaps i just need a higher revving setup for that. all the above seemed to do the trick. bike sits a little higher in the rev range (9500-9600rpm) when getting up to speed and then will top out around 10500-10600 rpm. i only sit there for a few seconds with this stock crank. still seeing top speeds of 49-51mph and seems to be more in the power band for the somewhat wacky current setup (contessa/4 race pipe). also took it down the road to a place nearby and did a top speed run with my janky phone mount/wannabe gopro setup lol. got some more glamor shots too.

New shock finally came today from God knows where China. Looks and feels decently built. I went out to the garage to compare it’s length to the stocker and it definitely seems a bit longer, which is kind of what I wanted. Hoping it performs as well or better.
I may have trouble fitting it next to the air box. The shock sits so close to the air box on these Prebugs. Couldn’t get a great idea of how much thicker it is than the OEM shock but it indeed is. It’s going to be close.
Maybe this is my cue to just run the open air filter. I’ve only been seeing temps of 260° max.

Found some time to get the new shock installed. I'm pretty happy with the overall quality, fit, and finish, given the price paid and all. It measures considerably longer than the stock shock and makes the bike sit substantially higher. I'll need to see how this feels when riding but I think it will be an overall improvement. The top mount and bushing must be setup for a 12mm bolt so I found a 10mm axle bushing I had laying around to swap in for this and it fit perfect. I set the lower adjustable perch or whatever its called to about halfway, but I may lower this a bit since the bike sits so high based on the new length alone. This does not fit with the stock airbox. Things are tight in there so I had to remove that and throw the unifilter back on, sorry neighbors. If anyone has any suggestions on a quieter air filter, I'd like to hear them. I may end up making some brackets to move the stock airbox forward a bit.

I see what you mean now. That's a chunky shock.

Bike sounds really nice! Love the shock too.. shame about the air box maybe you could mod it to fit… how you getting on with the hump at the back of the seat? Is it bothering you? I’m tall and so I had to do the hump mod but once Id done it the improved comfort was 100%

I’m tall and so I had to do the hump mod but once Id done it the improved comfort was 100% Just did some research and checked it out. Seems like it would help a lot. I have noticed wanting to position myself right in the middle of the seat and strangely my hips are really tight after even just short rides. Never happens on my other bikes. So you basically take the seat apart and shave down the plastic base in the back to remove the jump? No trimming or shaving the actual seat foam? Seems pretty straightforward, I would just be concerned about the foam settling over time and then the cover getting loose. Does that not happen?

Yeah all you do is remove foam cut the plastic raised rib sections level and put it all back together
It really transforms the seat..My seat is fine still going strong no sagging ect…..

I used a multi tool worked very well Wonderful, I was thinking the same thing. LOL I watched a vid earlier where someone took a grinder to it and it looked like a molten and torched mess (not that it will be visible). But I was thinking multi tool as well. Sounds good I will add this to the list.

Welp, on the way to work this morning this happened.
Bike started to lose power at high rpm’s so I pulled over and shut it off. Noticed the ground wire from the tach hookup had come loose so I did what I could to temporarily reconnect and start the bike. Got it started but the tech is reading higher than it should (6-7k at idle) and it backfires when given throttle.
Any ideas? Seems electrical to me…

I realized today that I didn't even connect the ground wire for the tach pick-up to a proper ground. I had connected it to the engine cover/shroud bolt that goes into the crankcase, but that is aluminum, DOH! So, I had been riding around all this time without it being properly grounded. Tonight I found a proper ground with a multimeter, connected the ground wire for the tach pick-up, and started it back up. No-dice. Same symptoms and issues: rough idle and strange backfiring and sputtering when revving the bike. Think I may have fried the CDI.

Found an old cheap eBay CDI laying around to test with. Slapped it on the bike and still no dice. Same symptoms as above. I really don’t have too much confidence in that anyway so I ordered a used but working OEM unit off eBay today. May just end up trying to replace the coil too. Really stumped and don’t feel like messing with the stator but that may be what’s needed.

Welp... feeling like an idiot and figured out the problem.
When I had removed the starter from the bike to accommodate the over range setup, I completely forgot to connect the starter ground back to the engine. Didn't even think of this because the problem started randomly when riding, so the wire must have been tucked up and "grounded" in some way but just sitting there not securely fastened.
Back in business, for now.
