Hi All,
Can anyone tell me the difference between a Minarelli 50cc Long and Short motor, I have a 95 Yamaha Zuma/BW, and I'm not sure which motor it is.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Long case has 12" tires Short case has 10" tires
Not totally positive though. Maybe 90GTVert or 2Strokd would know more than me. ☺ ☻ ♥♦♣♠

Your 95 Zuma has a vertical Minarelli motor in it. They generally are not *thought* of as having a longcase/shortcase motor (as they are what they are, all the vertical type motors are all the same as far as I know). Maximum tire size is 130.90.10. You can fit an aftermarket 13" wheel on there using a low profile tire, but there is no gain (final drive ratio wise) just appearance. If it is a final drive ratio change you are after you want to buy an up-gear kit, Malossi sells several different ratios, and I can attest that they fit well (though you do require a press of some kind to install them), and being straight cut gears they are a bit noisier.
Several folks have fitted the horizontal motor into the early chassis, but it requires you fabricate motor mounts, and a shock mount. Again, a horizontal Zuma is not really *thought* of as having a longcase/shortcase. It is only dealing with clone engines that the longcase/shortcase comes into play, the longcase being preferred.

Thank you for your feedback, I bought this zuma a couple of months ago, and it does not have a kick start, i was trying to purchase one from Scooter-Attack and it states Long or Short motor and I am not sure which one to purchase, A friend of mine told me if I'm to put a 70cc BBK, I would need the kick start because the electric start will not turn it over because its not powerful enough, would this be correct.
Aaron420e, I'll try ping them, thank you.
reveeen, thank you for the final drive info, something I have been thinking about, this info will come to great use.

:welcome: to the forum perry350. Unless you are going with some monster compression racing build, the e-start should be able to handle a 70cc kit. I've got hoizontal minarellis at over 100cc using e-start. I will say some starters are made better than others, but I'd think the genuine Yamaha would be up at the top of the list. There's a bit of info about the short and long horizontals here, just since it was mentioned. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=yamajog&action=display&thread=999

Brent: on the old verticals the E start barely cranks a worn out stocker. A combination of a few things, small battery/weak starter motor, poor mechanical advantage, the horizontals are a lot better.
The kick stuff is going to be pretty well Yamaha exclusive, or EBay exclusive for a early (pre 2002) Zuma, BWS, MBK. Clone stuff, or even late model Yamaha stuff is hit and miss on interchange. Not a big deal though, Yamaha lists, and stocks the parts nationally.

OK, thanks. Sorry, my experience with the mina is all horizontals.

i have a few spare peugeot speedfight kickstarts that will fit your motor.
if you would like one, let me know. you can have it for cost of postage - may be quicker to get one off local ebay though?
avoid the flat 'billet' aftermarket start levers - they dont fit lol!
& yes, i agree with reveen on the weak starter motor! mine barely sun up the 70 kit but won't budge it with the new mods - 1-2 turns at the most. but saying that, the compression is so high i reckon i could run it on diesel lol!

90GTVert, thanks for the welcome, possibly it would be easier to get a starter from say a 90cc if they fit. vvtr, thanks for the offer, I'll see what happens, I couldn't take it off you for free though, I don't have the minerals for that, I live in Australia, so I don't think shipping for somthing that small would be to much, I might even be able to pick it up as I'll be in the UK in June/July to see were my father grew up. I'm new to this scooter building, so I'm hoping there will not be to much hit and miss, my first purchase for the crankshaft ended up being the wrong one, I beleive they sent the wrong one, as all the details for it on the site were correct and it's not worth sending back due the price I paid for it compared to the cost of shipping, don't even know what bike it's for, looks exactly the same though, it is just a little bigger than the original.

if you are shopping at scooter attack do not shop for a zuma if you have a prebug any thing before 2002 is a pre bug
they still sell the pre bug in eurpoe as the bws there the bws stayed with the verticle engine and the same body style

Hi jmkjr72, I've been shopping for the Yamaha Zuma 50 (Vertical Engine), on good faith from a friend who has the same bike, I hope this was the right one as I just spent $300 the other night on another crankshaft and other bit and pieces. the first crankshaft I purchased was from a china site (big mistake).

Help me out here?
Do you have an aversion to shopping with Yamaha? I know the prices can be out to lunch sometimes, but my local dealer gives my 10% off across the board, and they are a fair, to good, source for aftermarket that fits.
This is the real, for me, bonus of owning a non-Chinese scooter. (I do own a Chinese scooter too, and parts come (to me) from out of country more reliably, and cheaper, than in country)

for oem parts i like to order from cheapcycleparts.com and from boats.net
belive it or not a lot of the trans parts are interchangable from the horizontals to the verticals the pre bug and the bug eye both run the same belt i also have read guys swaping the gears from horizotnals into verticals
but the cranks and bores are there own things

no, no aversion at all, here in Australia it's hard to get OEM parts for the scooters, believe it or not, it's quicker and cheaper to order a part from Germany than it is to order a part from my local Yamaha store, shipping and pricing, here is an example, OEM Ventilvar $140 with 5 weeks shipping, compared to Malossi Sport Ventilvar $30 with upto 3 weeks shipping, the crankshaft here $450, I paid $200 including shipping from Germany.
The thing for me at the moment, I do not know much about scooters parts, what is interchangable and what is not, so I have to take the safe way to not get burnt on every purchase, you ask me to rebuild a 440 Rat motor and I can tell you straight of the bat.
And trust me you guys are being a great help so far, much appreciated.
