Hi all,i new to all this scooter stuff and getting quite addicted to it! Iv be wanting to get a bit more out of my Taotao 50 4 stroke and first thing i was told was to lose the sealed carb cuz they run lean and burn up valves, which seems make sence cuz the scoot is bogging once i go past 3/4 throttle and not going past 30mph.Theres some on here claiming 45 on gps(secret 63 or something) So i orderd a carb and figured why not ger a uni filter too, then i read that they can actualy can allow too much unresctriced airfow into to engin messing up somthing having to do with th valves??Sounds allitle far fetched to me,k&n style filters always ment better performance in my book but people claim with one cylinder engins its a bit differint. So should i return this filter or what??Also i orderd one of those cdi, coil combos ,(non-rev limiter)says it advances the timming, now im starting to worry this too could harm this little stock engin??sorry for my bla bla bla, just alittle excited with my new ride and just want it to run like it should.

yep.. thats the one i read, so should i return it or try it??I guess ill give it a shot and if theres no actual gain ill send it back, unless you guys really think it can really damage the internal parts?

Running without a muffler can get the valves out of adjustment . Removing the airbox you have to upjet to not be lean

Running without a muffler can get the valves out of adjustment . Where did this come from? who suggested doing this? are we on the same forum?

Was saying the removing the air box wont but can burn up the piston . If you run without a muffler it can get the valves out of adjustment I know I did and had to reset them

Personally I like the stock airbox. Keeps out dirt and water that would otherwise get to your rings. Low maintenaince too...

well fox,i havent even got that far,i know that sounds stupid but im waiting for the new carb to get here,i was told that was the first thing i should do before i lean this thing out and burn up the rings, and these carbs are sealed so you cant even mess with them!!(its a taotao50cc) the problem is im gettin no extra power nor rpm pas 3/4 throttle, she just bogges, only hitting 30mph and i only weigh 130lbs.Why do you say that about the filter? It seams like thats the first thing everyone changes out and that airbox seems pretty restrictive.Wacha think about those performance cdi/coil units,i also orderd one of those just for kicks,it was ony 30 bucks,so if it dose anything at all ill be impressed. It says something about no revlimiter and advanced timming curve(its the oronge one with wire combo) sorry for all the noob questions,i definitly get a bit over excited when it comes to new toys like a little kid!!...lol thanks again for all the replys

The airbox does not really starve the engine for air and it helps keep out dirt and water and not be as loud . The Uni , K&N or other free flowing filters can have more flow however you MUST install a larger jet to richen it up and not be lean and burn up the piston . Yes a sealed carb is junk get one where its easy to remove the bowl for jetting and the air/fuel mixture screw accessible where some oems have it covered and you would have to drill it off but easy to mess things up and carb cab be as little as 35 dollars . Here is a good sparkplug chart to compare with www.4secondsflat.com/plug_chart.htmlHere tells about how a carb work along with more topics in a list www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htmWhen you increase the flow with air filter and or exhaust you will need to richen up the carb by upjetting and fuel/air screw adjustments . This is yet another advantage of EFI as the ECU adjusts for you . A size up carb may help some but bigger does not always mean better as a larger venturi has more flow thus can be leaner than a smaller carb with the same size jets . I like to be a tad rich to be safe and so what if it uses more gas its still way better mpg than a car and more fun to ride. Look up how to do a plug chop in order to better use the sparkplug display of various conditions

ok cool, thanks alot you guys,my carb should be here in a few days,im not even gunna risk running it around the block untill i get this junk off it.
What can you tell me about those cdi/coil units without the rev limiter claiming to have a more agressive timming curve, thats not going to mess any thing up will it,i got the orange one that comes with the coil.
So between the new carb,(85 or 88 jet ) uni filter, and the cdi/coil and that fancy 10$ plug i should see some kind of a differance rite!! Watch, with my luck, this thing will end up running like crap!!
I shouldnt have a problem just sticking that hose from the valve cover up to the air cleaner somehow between the prefilter, maybe put one of scrappys pvc valves or am i going to do that hole catch can set up. Just planning to keep it stock for now and rack up as many miles as i can!! thanks again, sorry for going on and on and on and on,damm noob..lol happy ridding to all!!

did compression ever get checked? just want to make sure you arent putting parts on a low compression engine.... And a TaoTao with a sealed carb is in the danger zone compression wise.
