thats pretty amazing that you made it 17 miles with a complete lack of gear oil, those gears are made pretty well it seems.
Are you going to replace all the gears/driveshaft? is that all that is needed to fix it?

Sorry, I must have missed this. Yes, Trail Tech sells TTO series gauges that are single function. You can get a temp gauge in that series for about $35-40. Like the Vapor you can get different thermocouple sizes to suit different spark plugs. The only bad thing is the TTO series has no back light. They're battery powered so no need for any wiring but to the thermocouple. I suppose another downside is that the batt can't be replaced so the whole unit needs to be replaced if a batt goes bad. So far so good for me. Mine still work after years of use. Its a shame they dont make it with a backlight, I'd have to have one with a backlight. Can't find any other reasonable priced CHT gauge either and 90% of them don't go past like 200 or 300/340 I bought a backlit 12v dc powered K-type CHT gauge for about $10 from aliexpress. If you want i can post a link? The only thing you need to do is buy a seperate thermocouple. Ofcoirse also a k-type otherwise the readings are off.

It takes a special talent to melt down high grade tool steel!Weld that sucker on a base plate and put it on the mantle piece with all the holed/fried pistons..It'll take a lot to top that!! JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!

Oh Man, Murphys law in full effect! So sorry bro! I guess that case is wrecked due to the non replaceable bearing? Possibly you can ream it out a bit and put a variator type bushing of the right size in its place?

Sorry to see this Brent. I did the same thing on my build but luckily I remembered it after a mile test ride.

lol I'm special for sure. Here ya go John, hanging over the workbench with caved/holed pistons and the one I did too much rounding on and ruined it during Project 49 : I was wrong in the vid too. It was not 17 miles. I also forgot that I didn't reset the odo before the ride so I could keep track of fuel in the tank. It was about 10. I made it around 5-6 miles before it was obvious something was not right more than just a noise. I initially thought maybe somehow something wasn't aligned or spinning as it should because of the shimming. Headed home, but of course didn't make it. I remember thinking I need to put gear oil in, then I started looking for a new clutch nut because the old one's threads were looking a little dull. Should have just followed through with the first thought. I have a complete set of gears like these in the 70cc spare I keep around. Kinda like to keep it together so if there's a time I really want to ride and something fails I can swap it in. I've got 13.52:1 gears. The primary in there also needs shimming because it's worn. I'm gonna look around. I may give up and put the deep gears in. I need to look at the bearing in the rear pulley too since the drive shaft is discolored from heat. Hopefully it's just gears and bearings, but I haven't looked it over well.

It's only gonna get worse the older you get Brent. The scatter brain I mean.
I remember sometimes customers used to try and talk to me while I was working on their scooters and I would have to tell them that the more they talked the greater the chance I was going to forget to tighten a bolt or forget to install a piece and that usually shut them up. I have to be left to think in a linear pattern when I'm doing anything or I end up with screws and nuts left over.
