I've been screwing around with slider weight tuning today. I'm still not done, but getting closer anyway. I started with 10.75g, then 11g, then 11.5g, then 12.5g. About 1.5g of foil stuffed into these was enough for me. I'm sure they could take more, but it gets to be a pain trying to pack the foil into the sliders. Since the 7g sliders are of no use to me with this setup, I used solder to make a set of 3 12g and 3 13g sliders out of them.
There are definite gains with the 11.5 and 12.5g sliders vs the numbers above from 10.75g.
11.5g
0-30MPH : 5.2 seconds (-0.1)
0-35MPH : 6.6 seconds (-0.2)
0-40MPH : 8.6 seconds (-0.4)
0-50MPH : 16.3 seconds (-2.2)
12.5g
0-30MPH : 5.2 seconds (-0.1)
0-35MPH : 6.6 seconds (-0.2)
0-40MPH : 8.6 seconds (-0.4)
0-50MPH : 16.0 seconds (-2.5)
You can see big gains in the 40-50MPH section from keeping RPM lower. Still I'm not seeing any real speed improvements. Before the times runs I did my usual runs up and down the road over about 1/2 mile. With the 10.75s I did 53MPH @ 8700RPM and 56MPH @ 8850RPM. With 11.5s I recorded 53.5MPH @ 8600RPM and 57MPH @ 8900RPM. With 12.5s it went 53MPH @ 8300RPM and 57.5MPH @ 8600RPM. It looks like it runs out of steam much above 8500RPM and the gearing keeps me from going faster since it doesn't want to over rev.
Next time I plan to try 12g weights and see where that gets me. The numbers are still far from impressive but overall the best times from these last runs show these improvements vs my first check of the setup after the car show :
0-30MPH : -0.4 seconds
0-35MPH : -0.2 seconds
0-40MPH : -0.5 seconds
0-50MPH : -2.1 seconds
At least I haven't gone backwards... yet. The gearbox is making a lot of noise again. I need to spend the time to try and get that primary drive shaft shimmed properly now that I'm not in a time crunch to make it anywhere with the scoot.
