Posting this here as I'm not sure where else it fits, but thought you guys might like this...
I've had someone fairly local emailing me about 49cc performance. The guy has a 4T and he and his buddies have started some short distance drag racing on grass. He said it has to stay 49cc, but someone got a Vino and it's "nasty" so he wanted to know how he may be able to compete. Naturally I told him that the best bet in a 49cc limited class will be to get a two-stroke and found one on facebook marketplace that I linked him to.
A couple of weeks passed and today I got an email that he bought the Keyway that I showed him and it's a night and day difference. He said they've done some shakedown runs and he should have sandbagged it, because now everyone else either has or is getting a two-stroke.
Hahaha! Converted a whole group to 2Ts!
I think they do their races less than an hour from me, but I haven't asked if I can show up because the RC-One is way over 49cc and does nothing good on grass.

... I haven't asked if I can show up because the RC-One is way over 49cc... So what who cares???!!! Bring some drinks, bring some snacks and just go and have fun and hang out with some 2t scooter folk who like to race em. Finally someone in your area who cares right?

Part of me has this mentality... and part of me has experience dealing with people in my area that ride scooters. So far, every time I've engaged scooter folks in my area enough to get in contact again the end result has been trying to turn me into their "buddy" so I'll work on their stuff and spend my time trying to explain go-fast stuff. When I was talking to one group that I used to see, they invited me to come ride with them... because they said I could fix their scooters if something happened. Sadly that wasn't even a joke. They really were much more motivated by finding help than finding a new rider. I wish everyone I met was like the folks that I know from the forum. If life were perfect for me, we'd all live in the same cul-de-sac and hang out in each others garages when not drag racing down our street. I haven't actually been invited anyway. I was very excited when I first heard mention of scooter racing locally. I was going to ask if it was cool for me to come if it were any other form of drag racing. He told me they have a facebook group and I said go ahead and add me and I'll check it out and that never happened. Just more questions.

true that. i run team "Independent". i am sure a lot of us rather run Independent, lone wolf, it's just easier that way, no need to deal with a different range of ego's. i just wish i had me some 49ccscoot stickers. i was thinking of making some 49ccscoot tire stickers. the way i see it, 49ccscoot is the tuning clan.

You guys seem to attract the loveliest of scooter folk then😅 But yeah it sucks when ppl try to take advantage of you, rather keep them at a distance. If they need your help, they can come here for all the info they need right?

The dude was emailing me again with more questions. He got a Yasuni Z and a S6 vari on the way. He said he's gonna add me to the group whenever he get's on again so I can see it. Sounds like all sorts of backyard engineering. Someone has a turbo on a 50 4T. He said it's "funny shit" and I need to see it.
I think they may get together to ride aside from this event, so I may see if I can tag along with T2 someday... depending how things go. I don't want to show up and be the one 40 year old and find out they're all in high school or something.

I don't want to show up and be the one 40 year old and find out they're all in high school or something. I have met a few people that fit the description of 'let's be freinds and ride together' some have just thrown that out there to have me hopefully help them out for a deal or free. bit most people out in Hawaii and I must emphasize the most nit all say this with the real intention of doing so. Out of all those people how many have I actually ridden with Is a number that I could fit on my on my 2 hands. But Even if it turns out to just be some homeless dude homeless dude that's in need of a repair or something if they even show some enthusiasm for moped And I try to help them out Especially if there's something that I have in my knowledge that can actually get them moving again Is a pretty powerful thing. 10 years ago I didn't know what a f ing carburetor was. So I feel truly blessed to know what I do know now and and I'll try to pass it on every chance I get even if half of the people are in one year out the other and come calling me back 3 × 2 fix the same problem it's easy 1 I just don't pick up the 2nd time. But for the one in a 100 that actually listen and learn something I'm happy to teach, And I'm never at a stage where I'm still unhappy to learn something learn something and I'm never gonna think that I know everything but back to the topic of You're possible face possible Facebook friends I feel like you're doing exactly the right thing given a chance feel him out but definitely be wary I mean the fact that none of them said you're from 49CC scoot forum.com your Brent!!@?* Alone says that something is wrong with them because you're a legend in my book.

Yesterday was hot, but nice compared to most recent weather. I was going to a friend's house 11 miles away, so I took T2.
I took it easy on the way over, just putting around at 40MPH most of the way. It sputtered quite a bit, but that's what it does at low throttle and it didn't seem that out of the ordinary. I did notice that when I rolled into the throttle to clear it out every now and then, it stumbled somewhere in the midrange. Didn't think much of it.
While I was visiting, my friend said he saw 3 scooters riding together in town this week. He said they all had pipes and they all seemed faster than normal scoots. Being a nice Saturday, I planned to ride around town for a bit before heading home. Didn't expect to see them, but if there are tuned scoots roaming around, I need to put in my bid for king.
I left his house and T2 didn't want to clear out in his suburb. Felt like it was going to die out if I tried to use much throttle. I rode away from town onto a more open road, figuring I'd get it to clear out and it would be OK. That didn't happen. It sounded like a chainsaw struggling and getting stuck in a log the whole time. I pulled over and it revved well from idle. Tried to rev from idle and see if I could get it to take off hard and clear out. Nothing. I pulled over again and swapped the spark plug out, which was soaked with fuel. It felt more crisp than it has recently after that. So I had about 345 miles on it at that point and it fouled the $15-$20 Denso iridium already. If there's good news, at least I do still have the original belt on it. That wouldn't have happened with the TPR, but I haven't checked it since after the car show with 100-something miles on it, so it could be ready to go at any moment for all I know.
With that sorted, I rode back into town to search for these tuned scoots with all of the RC-1's refreshed vigor. The hunt was unsuccessful. No sign of any 2-wheelers in town. I always enjoy listening to the echoes surrounded by the hard surfaces of buildings and asphalt downtown though, and it's fun to see kids excited to see the scoot. Did a few power hops for them. One little boy stopped while crossing the street to look at the scoot and, I presume, his sister shoved him out of the road. Then he punched her. lol I'm out there starting fights.
I was cruising home on the shoulder, doing about 40 again. The passenger of a truck leaned out of the window to give me a thumbs up as it passed. I let 'em go and then ran up behind them. Got it up to 78MPH. I did start out downhill, but I was on flat ground before letting out. That was mostly tucked, but considering it seems to run a little harder just off of full throttle and I could probably be a bit better aero-wise and I'm not sure it was totally out of speed when I let out, I think my assumption of 80 as max speed is likely close. Only about 20-40MPH off of what the internet says it should do, but I'm quite happy with how fast it is.
I'm guessing float height is fine based on doing a couple of runs up above 75MPH. Still, I need to actually try to tune this thing sometime. It's been together since May. Tomorrow is August and I've never got the carb in tune. lol It's so quick/fast as-is that it really doesn't force you to fret over it and I've been more than busy this whole time from editing videos for a full month after the car shows and then filming and editing the wheel and front end after that. The process takes so long for me that I'm always feeling like I get next to nothing done to the scoot. Can't say I really want to tune it when it's 90+ and humid either, which has been almost all of recent weeks and it sounds like what's ahead this week as well.

Seems like you need to lean out on the needle, which is so scary on such a high $$$ motor. But hey you know how to tune, you know the feeling and you have the tools and gauges to keep stuff in track.

It'll probably always do this. The TPR loaded up at low throttle and fouled stuff as well. It seems like it's either a pipe dream or it takes a high level of tuning to get a race setup to be both cool/safe to cruise AND not rich at any point and super crisp at all times. I don't get a kick out of tuning carbs so when I can twist the throttle and it goes hard and also ride around and not worry about it... I lose motivation to stress over the details.
That said, I have a clear bowl so I think it would be interesting to see if I can get a camera shot worth looking at of that in action. Then I'll go through main jets again and see what works. It may solve some of the low throttle richness with just a smaller main jet. I looked at pilots. It's got a 33. Smallest I saw was a 32. Didn't seem worth bothering there. I'll mess with the needle at some point. As you said Lucass, the thing is too expensive and too fun to tear it up over something that doesn't cause me tons of grief.
As far as plug fouling... changing it out every 250-300 miles is not that unreasonable considering what the engine is. It would be ridiculous for a stock scoot, but lots of racers toss a new plug in at every event or even every pass in some cases. I'd love to rack up lots of time and miles on this, but I've tried to be sensible and not ride it to death right away.

I've seen some peeps here in Florida heat get good results with pwk keihins or even stage6 pwk carbs?

I haven't taken the TMAX out since I went to Ryan's the day after Christmas. I may have put ethanol free in it before I parked it, but I don't think so. Was kinda worried about that so I started it up and took it out for an hour. No issues. I'm posting this in T2's thread because I took the dragy along so I could make a more direct comparison with it than using the gauges on each bike and video timing. | 0-30MPH | 0-40MPH | 0-50MPH | 0-60MPH | 60ft | 330ft | 1/8mi | T2 | 2.66 | 4.33 | 6.55 | 9.76 | 2.27 @ 17.45MPH | 6.68 @ 49.87MPH | 10.51 @ 61.95MPH | TMAX | 3.76 | 5.13 | 6.88 | 9.19 | 2.82 @ 14.57MPH | 7.35 @ 51.51MPH | 11.04 @ 66.41MPH |
Those are the best runs I have from either bike. "On paper" T2 wins through the 1/8 mile. The TMAX would go past in the 1/4... or probably just past the 1/8 marker because it's gaining speed quicker. I still really want to race them side by side. I had a friend's helmet here for a year or so because he let me make a GoPro mount for it so he could come ride the TMAX and race me. That started with the TPR. I just took his helmet back yesterday because he's doing the Mario Andretti experience soon. At least he can mount a GoPro for that, but I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever get my race. I should have held Ryan hostage when he was here to ride along to the car show till he rode one or the other for me. lol It looks like it would be a fun race to watch, though the big rider weight difference may ruin how close it looks like it should be. I'd really love to catch someone on a big scoot at a light... but most folks on big scoots don't seem very interested in such things and they're few and far between. I guess you'd have to be some sort of weirdo to buy a big 4T scoot AND want to race it. 🤔 I guess the numbers show why though. I'm gonna have to blow the dust off of the TaoTao to make the TMAX feel better.

I installed a Malossi fuel filter and the clear float bowl on the carb today. The new o-ring that came with the bowl was too long to fit. I may have stretched it inadvertently while putting a little grease on it, but there was a lot of slack. I tried freeze spray. Then tried putting it in the fridge a few hours. Nope. I tried putting it in hot water for a couple of minutes. Then I tried sticking it in water and boiling it in the microwave. None of that really got me anywhere. I gave up and cut part of the o-ring out. I put a little Permatex Ultra Grey where the ends meet and put the ends in the center of the side that would tilt so it wouldn't be in contact with fuel much. It looks pretty full to me, for a tilted carb. You may also notice that my mudguard is already worn through from the bowl plug making constant contact and I'm not even sure what the long line is from. I also put in a 170 main jet, which I think is too large, so I can tune from rich down at some point. That will test the fuel supply more too. Today was as nasty of a day as we've had all year with high temp as usual lately, but dew point around 80. It's supposed to be much better at the end of the week and weekend, so I'm hoping to do some tuning runs then and I'll see if I can setup a GoPro or two to watch the carb. That is likely harder than it sounds so it may not be worth posting.
