So last week I put the new variator on, but I couldnt get it in tune. Yesterday I put the new clutch on, and it magically made it more in tune than it was before I put the new clutch, bell, and ball bearings in, and went out for a ride. As soon as I started it up, I hit the gas about 2/3, and the front wheel came off the ground! And it's not even CLOSE to in tune yet! I still have carbon fiber reeds to throw in before I even bother trying to tune it.

Question. When I took my CVT cover off before changing the clutch, I noticed that my little rubber o-ring that slides around the clutch shaft on the end was missing. After closer inspection, it got ground up and ripped in half somehow and was wedged in the bearing inside the CVT cover. Is it a big deal to ride without that o-ring, or does it not do much anyways?

I'm surprised you don't have one of those lying around. I don' think it's really a big deal, but a trip to an auto parts store or hardware store might find you something close.

Cool, i wanna see some vids! These Polini Sport kits are all torque! I run mine w/out the o-ring...No biggie Cool! I'll put a vid when I can get it to do a full power wheelie I probably have a o-ring somewhere in one of my parts containers, but I didn't even look. I'm still awaiting shipment of my Yasuni R Black Edition exhaust I'm sure that alone is gonna make me power wheelie, on top of my carbon fiber reeds. Carlos said he was gonna look into whether anyone made an adapter for the intake he sent me too, hopefully he finds something. So if my scoot runs perfect when I first start it, but starts bogging at takeoff once its warmed up, would that mean its too lean?

It might like the extra fuel from the enricher, so I'd try to fatten the idle mixture up first. Make sure it's warmed up before adjusting and testing.

So after riding around a bit yesterday, I heard a clanking noise. The first thing that popped into my mind was that I was running too lean and I was frying the cylinder. Then I remembered that I was using a new variator, and I had taken off the "restrictor washer". I tore it apart this morning, threw the washer back on. After going out for a ride, I still hear the clanking noise, so it might be that I'm running lean still (especially since the temp dropped 15 degrees) As for the washer though, because it opened the variator up just that little bit more, I can now take off twice as fast as before ;D One thing I noticed this morning after taking the variator drive plate off, is that I'm starting to run into the same problem as Dr. Awkward. The heat is starting to wear away at my splines, and starting to melt the aluminum drive plate to the locking piece. I'm going to need to do some cooling work on my CVT cover ASAP or else I'm gonna have a trash variator, and crank.

You can't tell where the noise is coming from at all? Pull the spark plug and have a look before riding anymore.
You were doing wheelies before spacing out the variator, so you're doing bigger ones now? ;D

Like the cover is loose maybe, but it only happens when I hold the throttle in one position for a little while. I can hear it really well when I drive by parked cars and I get the echo. I'll have to pull the plug and check it out.

That does sound like it could be a spark knock. Could just be something rattling at a certain resonance. Note the throttle position and that will help you determine what needs to be changed if it is lean.

Note the throttle position and that will help you determine what needs to be changed if it is lean. I can hear it anywhere from about 20 MPH up to around 40 MPH, but only when I hold it at the same speed. If I variate the throttle position, it stops, and it doesnt happen at WOT. What does spark knock usually sound like?

My best description from my experience with scoots would be a crackle coming from inside the cylinder. It should only happen under load. You can look for specks on your spark plug. They are usually present if it's severe. It would also be less likely to occur when the engine is cold unless something is way off. If it's only happening while maintaining speeds from 20-40MPH, I'd guess you are 1/4-1/2 throttle? If the plug is peppered or looks lean, perhaps try moving the clip down to raise the needle. If you aren't seeing any signs of that stuff, just look everything over that could possibly be making the noise you describe.

Thanks Brent. I'll pull the plug tomorrow morning and post a pic so you can tell me what I'm looking at It does sound like it might be spark knock now that you describe it. I only hear it after the engine warms up. The first time I heard it yesterday was about 7 miles away from home, so the engine had plenty of time to warm up, and I was doing at least 40. I was going up a slight incline, and I was probably at around 3/4 throttle.

Took a picture of the plug a few mins ago. It looks good to me, but maybe you guys have a different opinion:
