I decided to quit playing with it and took the grinder to the cover. I flattened out the bumps from the bolt passages and knocked more off of the flats. I re-painted and stuck it back together. I was going a little faster still still sitting up and saw someone was stopped at my house so I didn't keep going. I pulled the cover off and found that where it was hitting 2 bumps, it's now hitting the flat section instead. Really minor rub on the other side. The belt is not showing signs of abnormal wear so far. If it breaks belts after all of this, I'm gonna have to assume it's a heat buildup issue on long runs I guess. I'm gonna give it another go with the grinder. At least I can justify this work to enjoy it more because I'm removing friction to hopefully increase speed. It's optimistic, but whatever keeps me working at it. lol

I sanded down the cover a little more. Still rubbing. I also noticed that the trans is staying very hot, so I cut a chunk from the bottom front to try and get some air moving through. I took it for a 7 mile ride. Still minor contact, still hot. I'll get it right eventually.

I ground more out of the cover to try and prevent belt contact and cut away the clutch area more. My experience with T2 was that clutch cooling did more than anything else in the trans. I decided to take it for a long test tonight, because it's really not even wearing belts on my short trips. I rode about 10 miles around 45-50MPH, then around a town for 5 miles or so. I ended up leaving sooner than I though becasue this thing is so loud at night. I had cops starting to pay attention to me so I got outta there. About 2-3 miles from home @ 50MPH... snap. I pulled over and called my father for a lift. I know the trans felt really hot. Haven't messed with it at all other than that.

Wow. All that...so what was common with the belts? Same size, brand ( weren't they different brands? ) Place of purchase ? Poor storage at place of purchase?

I've busted both Powerlink and the cheap Qjiang belts. I think I got the Powerlink belts from MRP and the others from scrappydog. All the same size, pretty much. The Qjiang were standard size (788 17 28) and the Powerlink are 788 18 28 IIRC. No belts were showing any signs of dry rot. Here's all that was left of the belt and the only markings other than some stuff in the CVT cover from post-break most likely. Every time it breaks a belt, the guides for the back plate disappear. i'm all out of those now, other than what is on T! and T2's vari.

I read your article on modifying the sheave by grinding it down at the shaft apex. When I looked at the photos I saw that the grinding area had a tooth to it while the rest of the sheave is in its mirror like finish. You stated in that article that your take off was much improved and I thought to myself "sure, the belt is grabbing on the rough surface" Is your grinded surface causing the early belt death?

Anything I ground there would be likely to cause a snap at low speed or idle. These always break at full speed. Besides, they are actually pretty smooth.

Had a guy that bought two of the same kind of off name belt, i cant remember? He bought them for a Super9 and they both broke within mere miles of installation! He got a different belt, different place and has been fine for ? long now... Maybe some belts just arent stored right, or are just too old before we get em? Cant get enough of the slides! People always need them from me. Find a deal on em let me know please.

I order slides from scrappydog and PFS. Decent prices at both, and the 139QMB slides work on the Hoca minarelli varis.

Do you know the condition of the belts just prior to breaking? Perhaps they were damaged at low speeds and then stressed to the max at high speeds and then snap.

I have checked over and over again anywhere from 1 mile to 7 mile rides and the belt wasn't even showing any signs of wear. Over a long period of WOT they snap. That's why I still wonder about heat issues.There's nothing different about 2 miles of WOT than 10 miles of WOT other than the heat buildup that I can think of. Of course that could still come down to the belts. Maybe some belts can't take the heat as well as others. I swear the CVT cover feels so much hotter than what I remember the other vented 2T covers feeling like. Also, since I opened the cover the first time when the engine was still stock the clutch bell has been discolored from heat and other parts show discoloration from heat. Never had that on either of my other scoots that I recall.
