I got the SunL going yesterday, and the Venus has been running for a bit, so my father and I went for a ride last night. We rode about 33 miles with no major issues. My father seemed to enjoy it and asked if I would want to ride the next morning as well. Cool with me. There was a bit of spark knock from the SunL last night, so I got up early and backed the timing off enough to make sure it was safe to ride for now. Never had any issues with that. We rode from Preston, to Easton, to Royal Oak, to Saint Michaels, and back. Everything was going smooth and it was early enough that the temps weren't terrible. All together it ended up around 60 miles, but both scoots didn't make it quite that far. As we were getting ready to cross Dover Bridge, a small drawbridge in a 50MPH zone with no shoulders, my belt snapped on the SunL. The rear tire locked up long enough to slow me down to about 30. I was too close to the bridge to stop before it so I coasted over slowing to about 15MPH at it's crest. I waved my father to keep going so he wouldn't get stuck on the bridge with me... one of us might as well be safe. I got buzzed by a Harley and a car and then coasted off the bridge to the shoulder afterwards. My father just kept on going to get a truck and pick me up. I sat and admired the view of the marsh (about 0.1mi) from where I got hit by the hay. I had made it about 5 miles from home. 15 minutes later, my father showed up and we loaded up the SunL. On the way to the house, he told me he had a little problem as well. He got within 1/8-1/4 mile from the driveway and the belt snapped on the Venus. Luckily, his just broke and free revved. He coasted toward the driveway. He said he didn't want to have to push the scooter up the driveway (a whopping 75ft maybe) so he kept more speed. The driveway is stone and he hit it faster than he should have and fell over. He skinned his right arm, not even enough to bleed. He hit his right knee (which he's had a partial replacement in a few years ago) and skinned it a little, also not too bad. That's all the damage to him. The scooter got skinned up a little on the right side and the pipe received a few more minor knicks and dings. So, who ya gonna call? Beltbusters! I'm really not sure what's up with all the belt snapping lately. I'm just worried that we won't be so lucky every time. Not sure how he'd handle a skid.

Man, what are the chances that you'd have 2 belts snap on the same day. If I were you, I'd start avoiding that road that you got hit by the hay. Seems like everytime you go near it, something else happens.

I live on that road and it's the primary way to get to most places around here. lol Within a 10 mile stretch of that road I've crashed T1 taking a turn off it too fast, been hit by hay, snapped probably 7-8 belts over the years (4 in the last month or so), had a guy try to swerve into me and brake check me over and over, and more. Just in front of my house a guy ran into the back of a tractor trailer that was broken down a little while ago, I was in the yard when a guy went to pass and somehow went all the way over and through my yard and a field (then just drove away after tearing it up), had 2 drunk drivers crash in the woods a few hundred feet away and then flee on foot, had a good friend fall asleep and hit the guardrail by my yard (BOOM! Looks around. "Holy :censored: that's Dave!), and on and on. Either I'm surrounded by crazy people, or it's just more of my luck. On the bright side, I haven't been struck by lightning yet. When I went to AutoZone to pick up a clay bar this morning, my friend there (same one that crashed in front of my house) told me his truck got hit by lightning while driving the other night. Fried some electronics, possibly the computer. All I could think was, "I hope that doesn't happen to me on the scooter." :zap:

Hope the varis are ok in both. Glad you Dad didnt get REAL hurt. I see one was a Gates , i had no luck w/my gates belt. I think you should try a Kevlar, or a good brand belt this time maybe?

I've got two $15 belts from scrappy for each scoot around and another Gates for the 2Ts. Might have a bando from T1 fro the 2T? I just don;t get why these scoots are snapping belts. I put T2 though so much more and never had much trouble.

Maybe Bando belts are just that good? That's all I really used on T1/T2.

I think allot of people would be surprised at how well some of the stock parts are. The factory rollers will last forever if treated right, and Bando belts speak for themselves! If anything they made sure the CVT equipment would last on these!

Glad your pop is going to be okay.
:jaw: I have never seen a Gates snap before now. Maybe those belts you got had been on a shelf for 5 years an dried out?
You probably know this already but sometimes the castings will have sharp spots sticking out right where the belt passes. Check the engine cases and covers for any signs that belts were rubbing on the metal if you haven't already.

Will do. They are still sitting as in the pics. I've been clay barring and waxing a Mustang all day... there's an import show around this weekend.

I cleaned both CVTs out. Pulled everything apart etc... Replaced the belts with the cheapo Quaijing belts from scrappydogscooters. I looked them over, but really didn't notice much that struck me as odd. I did notice this (img below) but that looks like it would have had to happen after the belt snapping. No way the belt would be between the back of the vari and the starter clutch otherwise. I figured my problems weren't over, but since nothing looked really wrong I didn't see any reason we couldn't ride when my father asked if the scoots were ready. Beltbusters IIThe belt on the SunL made it this far... I was chugging along around 36-37MPH and it started to feel like there was a load on it and slowed to about 33MPH. There was a headwind, so I thought maybe it had just picked up. Shortly after that, I started to hear a little detonation so I slowed the 30. Then the detonation came back and I let off some more. It felt like the load on the scooter was increasing. I knew something was up and then it kinda half locked the tire and came to a halt. Dad said belt chunks came out, no surprise. He turned around and headed home. 15-20 minutes later, I get a call from my mother. My father broke down in front of a store and called her from their phone. I told her to go get him first. She ended up getting me first, because he didn't wanna load the scooter by himself and he was sitting in the shade with a cold soda talking to someone he knew anyway. Then I went and got him. He said he was just riding along and it free revved like yesterday and he coasted into this store. This time he was smart enough to slow down before the turn in thankfully. lol It's another 90+ degree day here and I've had my fill of belt cleanup etc... so they are gonna sit there for a while.

Are you using enough contra on these scoots? What you're going to have to do is put some cheap belts back on and possibly 'color' the outer perimeter of the belt with some sort of tacky/waxy substance and then ride for a couple of miles or so while experiencing as many riding conditions as possible.... accel, decel, hills, hard braking, etc. You might also mark both pulleys to examine belt travel. The coloring agent should show if/how/where the belt might be striking something. A contractors Marking crayon might be good to use. www.midwestunlimited.com/detail.lasso?product_id=11273Or you might consider hiring this guy. www.exorcism.biz/

I'll have to pick up a contractor's crayon soon and give that a try, thanks. I have marked the varis on both scoots and know they are getting full travel there. Not sure about the rear pulleys. I've got a 2000RPM contra and Malossi Torsion Control on the 2T. Naraku 1K contra (comes with the Naraku vari in their "speed kit". Sliders in both. Belts have always snapped under WOT so far, usually near top speed. I might resort to an exorcism before long. "2) removing negative energy and negative spirits from people and locations." I'm gonna see if I can contact them and ask if that includes scooters.

Ya never know, that might be the ticket ;D! A good ole fashion exorcism might be just what the Sun needs ! That thing has been full of evil since you got it ! I hope ya figure it out! Im curious. Wonder if we can get a belt with a warranty lol? Be cool anyway huh? Get a Bando and see how long it holds up. . Are they getting hot? I mean, i know its hot outside but i wonder how hot the belts getting? HHhmm, i think i just thought of something to do with my Traxxas temp gauge when i finally get the adapter for the other one. I might try to mount the thermal lead for the Traxxas gauge somewere in the cvt system. Like back by the clutch, or close the the vari so i cant get some temp reading in there
