Is it possible to skip slots all together? Only have 3 rollers in every other slot?

You can do it but the engine will rev a lot higher and those 3 rollers will flat spot very quickly.

You could get away with it for a while but figure on buying replacements soon.

Not only that, but you are putting all the stresses on only 3 points of the vario instead of 6 places, thereby wearing that vario out sooner as well. It's not a good idea.

The only time I do it is when the stock rollers are way too heavy to get an idea how much the increased rpms will help get to the powerband. I have never done it for any amount of time.

The reason I ask is the rollers I had obviously are ruined but the new ones I put in are way too heavy. So I took 3 of them out and took the good plastic off and stuck the best 3 rollers I had that were bad (they weren't that bad just the covers) and stuck them in the new cover but its still a little on the heavy side... I still have hardly any acceleration and its slow going uphill. My old rollers were perfect weight. Guess I'm just gonna have to weigh them and order some more of those

That is the best way to go IMO.

Just remember, when you weigh the old rollers, a lot of that material is now gone so, they will weigh lighter than when new/stock.

looking at your variater pic. the roller slot at the "11" o'clock position, groove, where the roller goes is all wore un-even at the outer edges, and off at a angle. your new rollers wont last as long or perform as should with that bad of wear. that thing is toast.

What does the variator back plate look like where the old rollers came into contact with it?
