Good Evening,
I just picked up a TGB Key West. The owner did not have title as someone just gave it to her. It is in beyond rough shape. I bought it as a winter project. In order for me to obtain plates for it, I will need to find the VIN.
My question: Where can I find the VIN?
Mind you, the plate above the exhaust has been broken off, and the removable plastic part by the floorboard and knee board revels the steering column I believe but that is so badly corroded and rusted from sitting that I do not see anything engraved on it. I believe there is a place where the VIN is engraved in the scooter. Can anyone let me know where to look to find the VIN? I would appreciate it very much.

Under the panel I have circled it's engraved on the frame Thank you for the quick reply. When I open that little panel, the frame is so badly corroded from sitting that I can’t see anything engraved. Is there anywhere else I can find it besides the plate above the exhaust? Gosh, I’m hoping this isn’t a stolen scooter.

So, plate is missing and that plastic cover area is corroded extremely. I was hoping there was some other location.

Take some scotch brite not sand paper and clean up the area where its stamped on the frame. If you have decent digital camera take several pictures with the flash off as well as on. Upload the pictures to a PC and zoom in close, chances are you will be able to figure the vin # out.

I will give that a shot tonight. I quickly glanced over it after picking it up last night and immediately checked for the info plate above the exhaust and I checked in that plastic compartment area. The plate was missing so I went to the plastic cover and the part of the frame that was exposed was extremely rusty and it seemed to me like it was possibly eroded off. Otherwise, I'm not sure why there would be rust on the frame. I'm suspecting some funny business, however I will definitely do the scotch brite and let you know how that goes. I was hoping there was another area on the scooter that the VIN was posted on.

If it's missing from corrosion,it's possible your state may issue you a Vin plate if you can show then rust damage destroyed the vin. You may also be able to claim it's homebuilt from pieces and parts and get a vin plate and title, just document everything . I had this issue with a 4 foot box trailer,I had the title and it vanished, the lady at the dmv recommended just registering as a homebuilt, since it would cost money for a title bond, and the hassle, of course in my case I had a signed title,so I knew it was legit

That will be worst case scenario. I will try to clean it down with scotch-brite first and see if anything appears. If not, I will strip down the bike and see if there is anything hidden in terms of VIN.

When you bring a pic of the VIN into your PC, you can adjust the colors/contrast/etc to highlight the letters.

Thanks for the info. I went out last night and cleaned the area with scotch brute and some kitchen cleaner. To me, I️t seems like the VIN was scraped off as I do not notice anything there. Let me know your thoughts.based on the pic.

those look like angle grinder marks,I would bet it's stolen and the vin ground off , it may be hot, if the vin was ground this explains why it's so badly rusted there

Let me know your thoughts.based on the pic. Nothing there I thank you for the verification and effort. I guess it's my fault, I purchased it from the owner. She mentioned it is a completely homemade build, built with parts from various scooters, built by her brother. To me, it looks just like a TGB Key West so I did not think much of it. I purchased it without title and I had the seller fill out a bill of sale. Its definitely not running and it has about an inch of dust, bugs and gunk on it. Hasn't been ridden in years. It was about 19 degrees out when I bought it so I didn't do much investigating until I got home. I'm thinking of trying to register it as a homemade moped, which is what she essentially said it is. Would I be wrong for doing this? I never have been in such a situation, so I figured I'd ask. I appreciate everyones help!
