I got a tub r50x 50cc scooter for 50 bucks this week, and I’ve been really happy to find nothing wrong with it. With a clean carb, it runs on starting fluid and moves, so I bought a new carb for it... even the battery holds a charge... but last night I went to start it and I heard a clanking noise coming from the right side of the scooter... it sounded like it was coming from the flywheel, but I didn’t open up the flywheel cause I don’t have a puller ... what are you guys thoughts on it? I’m confused cause it still ran but made a clanking noise every once in a while then died (still on starting fluid)... I will post a video soon

Looks like you got an amazing deal on that TGB. Sounds like a starter clutch or bendix issue. I'm not too familiar with the TGB scoots and what they use, but someone here should be.

There is a big starter gear behind the variator if it becomes loose it shakes around and makes that clanking sound,it runs of the crank

Ok, thanks. How would I go about getting that starter gear back into place? The engine still cranks and it ran while the noise was occurring but I didn’t keep it running. Would the starter still crank the engine with the gear loose?

These really are great scoots, big wheels dual disk breaks, a nice size. They just have a few inherent issues like the crank and stator. They also have a warranty fix of a different intake to put the oil in a better place on the crankshaft. Mine has sat waiting for me to get around to putting the new flywheel on it.

They also have a warranty fix of a different intake to put the oil in a better place on the crankshaft. Mine has sat waiting for me to get around to putting the new flywheel on it. I took off the cvt cover and literally rejoiced when I saw the issue was the variator nut had come off, causing the starter to not engage completely. The guy said the variation was replaced, and something doesn’t seem right about the cvt setup. The fan is very flimsy , thin metal fins, and when I screw in the nut all the way, I am able to grab the fan and move it around , as if it should be tighter. I did not see a variator washer, and the old variator the seller included is missing half the rollers. He also included a gear he said I needed for something, the gear is small of one side and larger gear on the other side. I’m on vacation now sooo can’t post any pics, but any help would be appreciated...

Great news you found the problem. 👏 I would get some shims, or a washer. If the nut is doing up onto the spline and not the drive face it will damage the crank.

Sweet, running like a champ now. It’s not all good. I looked deeper into the cvt, at some parts catalogs from back when the scooter was new, and discovered that the previous owner had no idea what he was doing... the cvt has the wrong fan, wrong nut, and the parts it should have are low here to be seen. The spring, kickstart gears (might be the extra gear the seller included), bracket that screws into the fan to hold the spring down compressed, kickstart lever, gasket, and multiple screws for the cvt cover are all missing. As bad as it sounds, all in, online, all of these missing parts total at only about $125-$150 (I veered toward one site, tgbparts.co.uk, which had most of them, minus an odd washer), for the correct face, fan, springs, guides for the roller cover, new rollers, kickstart gears, new screws, washers, and the bracket to hold it all down. I’m planning to buy it all soon. Currently, it’s the variator, a corroded incorrect fan , and then a nut that doesn’t thread far enough to hold it all in place haha. Here is the place I found the diagrams: www.peirspeed.com/Cobrasales/parts/tgb/TGB%20R50X%20Parts%20Manual.htm
