Hello! I have just recently got a TaoTao Thunder 50 and I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to engine performance, terminology, and upgrading. I know the general maintenance procedures, but I would love to hear some tips and tricks on how to get the best performance without risking the life of the scooter. I owned an XY Chinese 50 prior to this scooter and it seemed to go much faster and it ran rather well. Maybe the Thunder just needs to be broke in a little more than just the one hundred miles it has on it now. I don't know, but feel free to let me know what you think! Fueling, spark plug, cdi, oils, any recommendations are always helpful!

I have been looking at the scooter. It has 12 inch tires right? First things I did was CDI, spark plug and coil wire. Oh and a battery.

Replace the stock plug with an NGK CR7HS or CR7HIX. Not for a power gain, but the stock plugs are more prone to failure. Tune the carburetor and CVT. Possibly replace the stock carb if it's a sealed unit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5j8gHg5kMcwww.youtube.com/watch?v=MLpkf2LINzoA CDI is a simple upgrade, but don't expect much unless yours is restricted. For $10-20 if nothing else you have a spare for troubleshooting no spark issues. (The only way to really check a CDI for most of us is to try another one.) I don't like that the ones I've tried, from ScrappyDog, are advanced at idle. Makes starting a little tougher.

The tires are both 12 inches, I put a NGK racing sparkplug with a .7mm gap in it from Autozone. I have not yet looked into a CDI change, but that is probably the next step since I have tuned the carburetor. Thanks for all the tips and advice!

The Thunders have been really reliable so far this year, coming from someone that's sold roughly 50 since June. You could try going to lighter variator weights. It won't give you top end, but it should get you there a little quicker, and if I remember correctly they come with 6 gram weights stock. Be cautious however, the end gear ratio is 3.71:1, meaning that if you eventually go to a Big Bore Kit or gain a lot of top end with other upgrades, you will need to regear it.

But want to clarify something. When you say 'end gear ratio' as in the above. You are saying the Thunder has 3.71:1 secondary gears? So what are the primary gears and final ratio?? i.e final is 11:1 12:1 13.5:1 etc?? Even better yet..what is the primary and secondary tooth count... i.e. 15/52 etc. Reason I ask is because this customer is going to have to upgear with his new BBK...but without tearing open the the gearbox...I have no clue what ratio gears to get.. Does this set seem reasonable?.. www.ebay.com/itm/281284682913?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITThanks, Glenn

Glenn, off hand I can't remember what the primary and secondary tooth count is, but it ends up at 3.71. I think it was something like 52/14, but without looking I can't remember for sure. I'll check out a set today and get back to you on it. Those are the same gears that I run and suggest to customers with the Thunder. Thunders typically cruise between 7800 and 8000 rpms with those gears and a 50mm kit. If you want to save a few days in shipping, I've got the same sets in stock right now.

The gear ratio I mentioned in the above link is what you suggest and have in stock? I will be in your area tomorrow or Friday.. I should drop in and see ya folks again anyway. But in the meantime...please let me know what primary and secondary gears the Thunder has. The guy just loves his Scoot...and now I want one..

Sorry about the delay, it's been pretty hectic around the shop. But they run a 52/14 setup.

Sorry about the delay, it's been pretty hectic around the shop. But they run a 52/14 setup. Ok...so the primaries are 52/14 or that is the secondaries? Trying to find out what the primaries are as well...so I know how to gear my secondaries. Or do they use the same primaries as the short case..with the 52/14 3.7:1 secondaries due to the huge tire size? 52/14 is a bit different than 90% of the scoots I work on...but those are short case engines with 3.50-10 tires.. Without tearing into one I don't know for sure, but I think they are similar if not the same as the short case engines. If I tear into one any time soon for a bbk and re-gear I will post an update.

And I forgot to mention that the numbers I gave you are the secondaries.
