I bought a high torque starter from scootdawg and upgraded to a 185cca battery and my starting issues went away. Never thought about upgrading the cable. Will be my next upgrade.

I just bought a thunder 50 with a 50mm bbk. I was thinking about adding an A9 camshaft as well. But my question is, is there anything special I have to adjust as far as the valves go with the new camshaft? Will it make a big difference? Also any tips on how to make it start easier. With the bbk installed the electric start takes a bit to finally start, almost like it cannot crank it fast enough. Once its started everything is runs great. You will love the A9 cam.. I have one in mine and as Brent said..you notice more power in the mid-high end range.I just set my valves at the regular lash. No need to compensate on valve adjustment because the base of the cam is the same as a stock one.The A9 differs in that lift is a hair higher..LSA(lobe separation angle)is wider..and duration is longer. Only problem I see is the 50mm BBK. Scoots I have worked on for folks that had the 50mm BBK typically got less than 1,000 miles on the before the Con Rod bearing went.

I went ahead and ordered the A9 cam today. I don't ride it too hard just like the extra power for going up hills, so hopefully the bearing will hold for a while. One other question I was thinking about.. I have my valves set at .003 intake and .004 exhaust. What difference would I notice if any if I adjusted it to the .002? My manual says .002-.005 is spec.

If it's running well now and the valve noise isn't excessive, you can just stick with what is working.

Just put in a stg 44mm stroker crank. New 50mm bbk, re used my bigger valves head with my a9 cam. 20mm carb. Uni air filter without the box. And aftermarket exhaust. Runs great really noticed a huge increase in torque. It Was crazy simple to do. I printed off the service manual and torque specs of the motor bolts for reference. Rpm increased to cruising around 8300 rpm from around 7600 rpm with the same drive train and just a 50mm bbk before the stroker crank and new bbk. With my peak around 8800rpm with 5 gram sliders, rpm's dropped around 5-600rpm when I tried the 6gr sliders. My only complaint is the oil seals I bought and replaced the originals with both leaked! The fix was I kept the old seals which weren't damaged, cleaned them up then used oil resistant high heat black gasket sealer around the seals. Seems to be sealed up not seeing any oil on the ground. so I would try to find the brown colored seals over the black ones I bought if possible. Variator side was easy the other side sucks cause you have to pull that one side of the case back off. I borrowed a buddies go pro and did some test runs I'll try to have them posted by Wednesday.

Does anyone know what the stock weight of the rollers are for the 2014 Tao Tao Thunder? I received some 8g rollers with my BBK and havent installed them yet, and was curious what the weight difference was between them and the stock ones.

What is the best octane gas to run in the 49cc scooter with a BBK?

Premium. If it's a low compression setup you can use regular. Most seem to end up pretty high compression.

I was out riding the other day and noticed a clicking noise coming from what seems to be the variator when going between 35-40 but goes away faster or slower than that. What could be the problem or the cause?

Kinda hard to know just from the description. Could just be something that rattles with vibration at a certain RPM.

Which way do you turn the air fuel mixture screw for rich and lean on the thunder?

I installed a #90 main jet and when I ride the scooter seems to hesitate briefly from idle but recovers and runs fine after I get moving so I think it is running slightly lean. However I adjusted the mixture screw clockwise about a half turn which I believe is leaner and it seems to be getting better but not fully corrected yet. I only have about 3/4 of a turn left until it is screwed in all the way. Am I going the wrong way?

The mixture screw on these controls fuel. Turning it in will block off fuel to lean it out and turning it out will allow more fuel to pass for a richer condition. All stock 4T carbs are like that, but the easiest way to figure it out if you don't know is that fuel screws are on the outlet side of the carb, toward the engine. Air controlling screws are on the inlet side of the carb, toward the filter.
Adjust it in farther if it helps. If it gets to below 1/4 turn or pretty much closed then you may want to consider a smaller pilot jet.

Thanks, but even though its a stock carb and I now have a bbk, you think I may need a smaller pilot jet?
