With all of my mods Im getting around 38-40mph I have a 49-17 gear set in it and really didnt help top end but hurt bottom end acceleration a whole lot. Love the thunder though.

I have the Tao Tao thunder 50. I have had considerable issues and trouble with it. Still having problems with getting it started in this cold michigan weather. New battery no help ordered a high torque starter yesterday hopefully this helps. Also I have a racing clutch on the way. I run a combination 5g and 7g rollers. Considering dropping to 3g and 6g due to not enough rpms.
Where abouts are you with the new scooter?

My biggest thing I wanna saw with any bbk is a compression tester. I do bieve this is the only engine in history where. The compression drops so quick after a bbk during breakin. You need to know where and how your internals are before dropping more on the externals. I'm not well enough into secondary gearing to know what would be best for the thunder and yes this changes depending on driving conditions. I live in the foothills of denver and 1-2 mph high end wasn't worth the drop I had with low end acceleration. And staying reasonable on te up hills. Been snowing in denver for what seems like almost a month waiting for better weather ERP get out and try some thing different.

I ran a compression test and dropped to 120. So I put a smaller head on it. Still not getting over 39-41 top speed. I will list the upgrades here soon. Beginning to wonder if it just doesn't like cold weather.

I just got a 2014 Thunder and am looking to get a bbk and was wondering if it has the 64mm or 69mm valves on it?

The motor number is 1p39qmb my understanding is that it comes stock will a 62cc motor. Could be mistaken. I've got every possible upgrade on mine and it won't break 45mph. Be prepared for the speedometer to be 5-15mph off. Mine is 15. I had to buy a GPS system in order to get a accurate reading.

My 1P39qmb Taotao was a 39mm bore so I believe it is a 49/50cc not a 62cc.

TaoTao should be 69mm valves, and P codes do not designate 44mm bores (63cc). Some P engines did have the 44mm bores, but they all do not. I don't think the larger engines are very common on recent model years.

Just purchased a 44mm stg stroker crank, and a new 50mm bbk, going to try to get them installed next week. I have done some research online for how to replace the crank and have bought the tools needed to take off the flywheel etc. Any other tips on a crankshaft replacement would be a great help. I have on order a UNI air filter, just put on a ncy super tranny kit - really like the clutch but the variator and aluminum starter gear stripped on me after 1 day. So PLEASE feel free to let me know if there is any special tricks to installing the crank. Any special info I need to know regarding setting up the timing etc would be good also. Ill try to take some photos and post them if I have the time. But Im hoping for around 8-9hp after everything is done.

And I SWEAR after I do this I'm done with upgrades for a while! not to much left to change.

The main trick is to take your time with it. Use heating and cooling for expanding and contracting the cases and bearings vs beating on the crank to get it in. Not a bad idea to check piston to valve clearances and squish/clench clearance between the piston and head. Verify that there's clearance between the piston and the crank when at bottom dead center. Most say that stuff is unnecessary, but it doesn't take long to check and should something be wrong hopefully you'd find it that way.

Been riding it everyday 20 miles a day since Monday. 1st time in over a month or longer i have been able to ride it consistently. And its running pretty good from what I can tell. Really making me considering to postpone the engine rebuild and wait for something to happen since the parts are bought and shipped, they will be here if it happens. Or go ahead and do it since I got a couple of days off and its about to be riding season. We will see once the parts get here if I can just keep them sitting on the shelf in the garage or not... lol

You could always be on the lookout for a cheap spare engine. You may even be able to find something on craigslist cheap in the form of a whole scoot. Sometimes they go for next to nothing if the owner no longer has paperwork or it's in rough shape so you could take the engine and whatever else is of value to you and scrap the rest for less than an engine alone may cost. You mainly just need the engine cases and gearbox to be in decent condition.

I just bought a thunder 50 with a 50mm bbk. I was thinking about adding an A9 camshaft as well. But my question is, is there anything special I have to adjust as far as the valves go with the new camshaft? Will it make a big difference? Also any tips on how to make it start easier. With the bbk installed the electric start takes a bit to finally start, almost like it cannot crank it fast enough. Once its started everything is runs great.

Some people will change valve lash settings with different cams, but I'd just start with the standard settings around 0.002-0.003". It should make the engine pull harder at higher revs.
Check the condition of your battery. Could be getting weak. Could also be that the kit has high compression and paired with the heavier parts and more friction it's a bit much for the stock starting system. A battery upgrade may work or perhaps using quality 8AWG cables to replace the current starting cables along with a battery upgrade. Compare your current batt's cranking amps to specs on new ones. A lot of times you can find batteries that are the same size but have more power.
