Great, will experiment with that at the weekend. The 8mm fuel filter I bought is too big (ask before buying in future Simon...), so I've ordered up a 6mm one and some matching fuel hose. The fuel filter currently in the bike is filthy and the small metal part at the top is corroded so it definitely needs replaced. Also got a new NGK spark plug so will put that in too, can't do any harm. Planning to remove the seat pan and the side panels to give the engine area a proper clean up as it's pretty grotty.
Thanks again for all the invaluable help and advice.

Well couldn't get the bike started again this morning so looks like it's time to bite the bullet and remove the carb for a clean. Watched enough YouTube videos recently so I think I know what I'm doing. Also going to replace fuel filter and lines, add Silkolene to the fuel and once all that's done have a look at the idle. Is there anything else I've missed ?? If none of that works then I might just sell it on as a non runner. It's a nuisance really as when the bike does go it flies along, far quicker acceleration than the 4 strokes I've had in the past which is a benefit when your negotiating inner city traffic.
Looks like a busy weekend ahead....

OK, 3 hours later and I think it's done. Removed the carb, soaked and sprayed it with cleaner, used Muc Off to clean up the general area under the seat, and then put it all back together again. Actually surprisingly easy. Haven't tested the engine yet as I need to replace the fuel filter which is filthy, don't want mucky fuel in my nice clean card. Should have that early next week so will test it them.
Anything special I should do when first starting a moped after a carb clean ??
I've taken some video of my exploits today. Will stick it up on Youtube and post a link here later (just in case I've made any terrible mistakes !!

A simple fuel filter should be pretty easy to find. Try an auto parts store or TSC heck even Home Depot- whatever u have in your neck of the woods. I guess I'm just impatient and can't wait for a $4 filter to be delivered to ride my scoot lol. Sent from my XT603 using Tapatalk 2

I know what you mean, still as a Scotsman frugal is my middle name. Got one coming from eBay next week along with a new fuel line. Fingers crossed when that is fitted and I hit the button it will fire up and off we go...

Let me know how it goes.
I have a 2006 TGB R50x that looks nearly identical to yours on the inside. Replaced the carb and fuel/vacuum lines on it.

After doing main jet changes and the carb bowl is empty it takes a bit of turning the motor over until the bowl fills and she fires up- maybe 25 seconds...

Thanks very much guys, never touched engines etc in my life before (left all that sort if thing to the experts) so the help and advice is greatly appreciated. I changed the fuel filter and spark plug yesterday. Put a picture of both on a separate post. The old plug looked brown at the end which I'm told is good news, the old fuel filter was in a horrible state so defiantly needed to go. The hosing all looks OK. I was expecting fuel to come gushing down the pipe from the tank into the new filter, but it didn't. I take it this will happen when I switch on and try to crank the engine? Still waiting for new fuel hose clips to arrive before I dare test anything, will be able to test start by the end of the week hopefully.

If your fuel petcock is like mine- most stock are- it has an "extra line" that goes to the carb for vacuum. If you were to suck on the vac line you'd get the petcock bladder to open and gas would come pouring out of the other line! So, yeah, the vacuum from cranking the engine over is what opens the petcock and starts the fuel flowing...

^ What niz said.
When my bowl was empty I tried cranking and didnt really get anywhere. I just sucked on the line to fill up the bowl with gas and then started. once running it creates alot more vacuum and fills faster.

I was doing a little more cleaning up tonight and tested the vac line by a quick suck on the end. Sure enough fuel started to flow into the new filter. Looks good to me, I think I might just use this method to put some fuel into the bowl and make it a bit easier to start. One other question for now...I've noticed some people on eBay selling derestricted CDI units that fit my bike: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400612453268?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649Would fitting one of these allow a few extra MPH without the need update rollers, exhaust and all the other tuning requirements I've read about others doing to their bikes on here. The listing says the unit can be used on a standard or a tuned bike and increases the rev limit. Anyway, it's all looking a lot cleaner in the carb area now, just waiting for fuel clips to arrive in the post, which will hopefully be tomorrow, and I can start her up at last and see what happens....fingers crossed !
